Rates vary quite a bit depending on location, rural is more expensive, but my bill for January 2010 works out at $125 per KW/h, centre of La Serena on a standard domestic tariff. The standing charge plus meter rental was around $1200
And CONAFE charge $700 if you want the bill mailed to you.
But the killer is the limite invierno where they average your summer energy use then use that as a ceiling for your winter consumption. Kilowatts over the limit are 50% more expensive.
And the water companies do the same in reverse in the summer months.
Just another pillería

I honestly don't know what I pay. I think it is around 40,000 pesos a month. I don't think I have seen my bill like more than twice this year. It comes in, my secretary pays it with all the other bills, and she sends me the total for the month.

Santiago $125 KWh
The Coast North of Vina $130 KWh

It makes my new-place-on-the-coast's, solar system look very cheap, it is 4.2 times what I pay in Vancouver BC.

hey I found one of the bills. We pay 112 per kwh.

On another note, everyone should pay attention to last months bill if your power went out. CGE just sent us a bill for last month saying there was no outages. Well, everyone in the country (and most of the World) knows there was at least one big outage across the country. In Chile you do not get billed for outages for one, and if it extends past certain times the company has to pay you.

I am even willing to give them the days around the earthquake, because somehow they managed to keep the lights on in the early hours until the national grid went down for repairs later in the day.

That may explain why last two bills were lower per kWh. We were out almost 6 days, so 27, 28, 1, 2, 3, 4.

Apartment in las condes..... 1x late 20s Male :), last month....

Noche 52 kwh = 3575 = 68.75
Dia 75 kwh = 7367 = 98.22
Punta 40 kwh = 3929 = 98.22

Average = 89.04
fix charge = 627
charge for use of the system troncal = 150

FYI, this is interesting, for our meat plant in osorno from mid afternoon to sometime during the night every day, it is cheaper for them to burn diesel running the generators, (these are two very large 20ft container size cat generators) than buy power off the grid.... found this out when our UPS blew on one of the switch overs and our servers went down...

If the average is about 25 cents (112 pesos per Charles) American per kilowatt, it's kind of high. But do you get twice as much energy because it's delivered at 220 volts as opposed to 110? Then, it's pretty reasonable.
Or am I totally off base?
Thanks for any simple explanation that can be provided.

No, the price is just high. A kilowatt hour is a 1000 Watts of power delivered for one hour. The voltage doesn't come into it, at least not directly.

I don't run a whole lot in my house that uses electricity, accept our computers and servers (1 server, 3-4 computers that run 24 hours a day), and we use around 486 kwh a month. Refrigerator, washer. Can not think of anything else.

I calculated the cost of shutting down and starting up computers for us was way more expensive than leaving them on all the time. If you use your computer one or two hours a day, it will save money. If you have them doing something like we do 24 hours a day (even when we are not at them), it is way more expensive in waisted time.

Right. Volts times Amps equal Watts. More volts, less amps, same watts.
Thanks for jogging my memory.
