Voter address change closes 27th Dec, for April Vote

Post by admin » Wed Dec 25, 2019 3:38 pm

first, for those that do not know, all residents of Chile for at least 5 years are eligible to vote. Including the time you were under temp residency.

This 27th of December is the last day to file for a change of address, if you wish to vote in April 26th, 2020 for the new constitution.

Here is an article on the various ways to do that:

https://www.latercera.com/politica/noti ... te/951530/

So say you had moved to chile, recieved your residency in one part of Chile and then moved. your last address with the civil registry, once you complete 5 years, will be what is used as your voter registration.

just for clarity, if your last address used at the civil registery (for whatever reason) is correct, then your registration should be automatic.

Looks like I'm heading to Osorno to vote, too late to change now

I´ve had residency since August 2014, so 5 years and 4 months. My RUT is not registered in Servel. Perhaps there´s a rango de tolerancia around that 5 year number :?

I think it may be based on PR years not total years of residence. Any code in the Chile law that specifies how it is supposed to work?

The five years are based on visa vigente, which basically means anytime that your residency[ visa was "en tramite" does not count to the five years. I've been here for 9 years and could finally be registered to vote this year simply because there was a good chuck of time over those years where my paperwork was being processed. If you currently have a PR visa, you can include the years you were on a TR visa so long as there was no period in between the two where you were without a valid visa.

temp + permanent residency time, calculated based on the issue dates of your chilean ID ( believe they use the civil registery database).

On the bright side, if you die, you are still eligible to vote.

not sure they ever got around to fixing the dead people in the voter registration list.

If not, both allende and Pinochet are still eligible to vote for the new constitution.

I could be wrong but my understanding is that it's actually the current constitution that allows residents with 5+ years here (of any nationality) to vote.......it would be ironic if that clause of the consitution caused its own undoing 8)

The right for simple residents to vote is fairly unique as far as I know in the world.

That is why I am telling people apply for citizenship. There is no guarantee any of the rights of residents are going to preserved in a new constitution.

Even with the best of intentions, they might simply get it wrong, forget to include something, kick it to a regular law that we wait years for them to fix. I am not just talking about voting either. There are lot of things hard coded in the current constitution, that probably should not be there.

A citizen is a citizen.
