Aduana cost for bringing our dogs over

Post by Serge » Wed Nov 20, 2019 12:49 pm

Good day,

We are a Belgian 40 something couple and moved to Chile, Lake District 3 months ago. Since we have 4 dogs who needed to come with from South Africa, we researched the procedure well in advance and had to use a pet travel agency as they had to fly cargo. 2 of them are huge :D
A month ago, we were finally able to fetch them in Santiago. Clearing them took 7 hours, which we knew could happen. We knew about the bodega and SAG costs, but the Aduana was a very unpleasant surprise. We had to pay a hefty CLP 900.000 IVA, although all papers stated they were mascotas. Is this normal procedure?

They are loving life here so it was well worth all the plata and stress. If someone wants more info about bringing your dogs along, I'll gladly answer any questions you might have.

Have an awesome day,

Serge

something off there. we have never been charged an import tax on a dog, even when the dog really did cost $20,000 u.s.

More than 2 and having a breeding pair looks like a business so they tax you, did you bring in a breeding pair?

We brought our dog over in September 2019 and were not charged anything by the Aduana.

While it is exactly the same case, we bought our cat in May and we weren't charged anything.

We tried to fight it, because none of our research mentioned this. We even had the official talk to our lawyer on the phone but she insisted that was the only way to clear them. The next person also had to pay. The amount charged was based on the airway bill. Derechos Ad-Valorem was US$ 239.74 (the minimum they accepted for 4 dogs). Impuesto al valor agregado was US$ 804.72, 19% of the airway bill and la tasa verificacion aforo was US$ 39.96.

We have 2 girls (3 and 7) in full glory but our 2 boys were spayed a long time ago. So no breeding pair, although our 14 year old Jack Russell and 10 year old Mastiff would still have a go at it if they could. Everything was fine until a higher ranked officer interrupted the clerk and asked if we would take them with us if we were to leave Chile again. We said 'of course' and suddenly the amount became ludicrous.

We had to. Because of our Mastiffs' size and weight, we had to fly them as cargo with KLM. We contacted other airlines and all said they only worked through animal travel services. Their services did not include clearance or import, only the flight from Cape Town to Santiago via Amsterdam.
I have e-mailed numerous Chilean custom agents since this ordeal, casually asking about the correct procedure if we wanted to bring our pets over... No reply whatsoever.

Always so pleased to hear other people bringing their pets with. The shelters in South Africa can deal with the amount of pets being left behind by their relocating owners. I can only assume them flying as cargo has something to do with it.

We've brought our 30 kilo Labrador as cargo back and forth to the U.S. 4 or 5 times in 10 years on AA and have never been charged anything. Something is definitely not right.
