English speaking doctors in the Los Lagos region??

Post by Humbleambition » Sat Jul 13, 2019 7:22 pm

Hi!

I’ve moved to live and work in Puerto Varas and have been here for about 3 months, getting by with basically no spanish (I’m from South Africa, speak various other languages but not Spanish yet 😅).

My work has registered me on the FONASA system, but I have lupus and know that I need to somehow find nephrologist/rheumatologist who can oversee managing my illness and to get registered on to GES...
Does anyone here know of my English speaking doctors who might be able to get me going on this process?

The last resort would be to get a bilingual work colleague to go with me to a Spanish speaking doctor... but that would just be super awkward (brand new colleagues and all😅), and I would be so grateful for any help 🙏

All the best,
Jen

My sister in law has lupas and lives in the x region. if i get a chance i will see if I can get the name of her doctor. there are specialist in santiago, and an occassional flight to santiago is fairly cheap now.

most of the doctors i have seen in chile, including los lagos, speak some kind of english. in fact typicaly I avoid any doctors that do not speak English for anything more complicated than basic medical issues, for a very simple reason beyond communication issues. It means they are keeping up with the latest medical journals and research, that tends to be published first in English.

My wife's aunt, that has been a pediatrician for over 50 years, told me once to avoid doctors in chile that do not at least read and speak some basic English.

Most specialist, for just about anything, will speak pretty good english. I have had more than a few that studied and worked in the u.s. or Europe.

I don't know if she speaks English, probably does, most medical people do, but I went and saw
Marisol Jurado Orellana at the Puerto Varas Clinic, theres not many specialists in Puerto Varas , and she is the only Reumatología that I know of here.
That was through Isapre though, not Fonasa, it maybe worth paying for appointment with her and she will be able to point you in right direction.

yea, the hospital in PV has so many management and financial problems, many specialists in the region will not work there.

long story, but they keep racking up debt, judgments for malpractice and deaths, to the point that no one wants to take them over, including the government. they are suppose to start construction on a new public hospital i think in 2021 in PV.

Oh wow!
Thank you so much!!
My work colleagues had let me think that there are no doctors here that would speak any English 😅
You make a really good point about keeping up with journals etc, it’s an interesting way to screen for doctors 😅

@41southchile, thanks for the name. I will look her up and see if I can find out if she can speak English and make an appointment.

I really didn’t expect responses so quickly.
Thanks guys 🙏
