The "Aduanas" website mentions that if you bring USD $10,000 or more, you'll need to fill some additional forms. No upper value is mentioned, though. Source: https://chile.gob.cl/chile/tramites/par ... aneros-sag

They do have a website where they mention the fines if you don't declare it, and it also mentions the relevant laws. It may be worth reading: https://www.aduana.cl/declaracion-de-di ... 84148.html

$10,000 U.S. and above must be declared, and you will want associated documentation of where the money is coming from (e.g. sold a house in the U.S.) and where it is going (e.g. buy a house in Chile).

I will add the bigger, more obvious risk here: getting robbed.

Declaring that much money at airport means making in known to a whole lot of people, you have that much cash on you. It puts a target on your back the moment you step out the door. Don't be the clueless gringo, trying to hail a taxi at the airport curb by themselves late at night, with say $30,000 in your pocket and half the airport knowing you have it.

interesting article on the amount of cash moving through chile this last year:
https://www.latercera.com/pulso/noticia ... da/634149/

seems the zona francas are the primary place cash is moved, and bolivia, and peru top the list of comings and goings.

my pet theory is there is a lot of drug money laundering going on involving those countries, and the zona franca makes for an easy place to wash it.

there is also a rather brisk illegal trade of gold and other minerals out of those countries through chile, and out the major markets of the world.

they really need to raise that limit. $10,000 u.s. is not what use to be.

They passed those laws back in like the 80s or something.

Yes, that US$10,000 has been around even before the 80s I think Canada and the US have the same limit.

pretty certain that global limit of $10,000 is an american invention imposed on countries all over the world. same sort of b.s. as fatca, copyright lobby, etc the u.s. imposes.

nothing the u.s. hates more than people using other countries to launder money. they want to keep all the money laundering in their own banking system, with a few crumbs shared with English territories.

Canada's limit is $10,000 Canadian dollars which at today's exchange rate is only $7,438 usd, or about $5 million clp.
