Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings
Scotiabank from Canada to Chile converts to USD in between, just as Santander and the Euro......go figure.....
It's all about the wine.
Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings
Try firmafx.com. They pick up your draft at your branch, convert cad to USD at a good rate and wire directly to Scotia. Then Scotia might still charge you for depositing the. Money to your account but that depends on whether or not you send flowers to your bank manager for Christmas

Transferwise also works. I've sent a transfer from EUR to CLP recently and it went through without any hiccups or exchange rates sheenanigans.

no Santander is a horrible bank. most of that has to do with their own crappy management.
I get euros like nearly never. in fact that euro wire was an accident. they were suppose to have sent dollars. so totally not worth chasing a few more pesos.

Let me see if I can get this straight.
So a frenchman who doesn't even speak Spanish and hasnt even been to Chile is initiating a charge in the Hauge to complain about something that happened over 170 years ago, because strangely enough too somehow 170 years ago some Frenchman tricked some Mapuche no doubt, and formed an unrecongnised state promising to be their savoir.
And the Mapuche are tagging along over there now to get a free trip to Europe as it's good publicity and may be good for some fundraising from their bleeding heart culturally sensitive European supporters . And oh of course the current government is bad and evil because they are still trying to stop delincuintes shooting at old grandmothers and burning people alive in their houses etc etc etc, that about sum it up ?
Not saying there is a lot of issues to sort out and fix but one sided articles and European interference doesn't help the situation, still I guess that's the way of the world and has been doing for 100s of years apparently.

Yup I'd say you summed it up. Strange but interesting. I'm not too familiar with the Guardian, I just regularly look for mentions of chile in news aggregator sites.
Just when one thinks the Mapuche are getting used to the way things have been for a long time, a relative homeostasis of angst...a frenchmen representing the Mapuche Kingdom of Araucania takes their case to the ICC. As bizarro land as this is I am still interested to see what if any response the ICC gives. Probably wont come to much

Yes it is interesting that's true especially about the so called kingdom of Araucania.mem wrote: ↑Sat Apr 13, 2019 10:16 amYup I'd say you summed it up. Strange but interesting. I'm not too familiar with the Guardian, I just regularly look for mentions of chile in news aggregator sites.

Its interesting what people are trying to call out now and seek apologies or restitution for , these things that happened hundreds of years ago in a very different era, and they are judging past injustices on today's standards.
The new president of Mexico was trying the same populist tricks the other day asking for Spain to apologize and blaming them for Mexico's problems . Spain rightly said they had nothing to apologize for .
With regards to the Guardian Ive just picked up after reading a few articles from the guardian that it tends to be very left leaning, (I wont say liberal because that's a word that has been misappropriated and actually confuses left wingers who advocate government support/welfare state with true liberals and liberalism , but I digress that's another argument) .
Also Not sure if you know but you can get google to send you a daily email of all the mentions of Chile in English speaking media , I used to search too till I found that function.

Re: Chile Wealth, Inequality, and International rankings
I am from the UK. The Guardian is left wing. Its bias mainly shows in the things in chooses to report on (rather than bias on those topics), for example more articles on feminism and climate change than right wing publications, and less on economy and trade issues.
Apart from the selection bias on topic, the articles are mostly very fair, apart from the odd phrase or sentence which gives away dislike of right wing political parties or politicians. Consider its articles to be fair, with a slight hint of left wing bias.
It is more intellectual/progressive left wing than populist left wing.
The majority of Guardian readers that vote do so for Labour or the Liberal Democrats, the two leading left parties in the UK, and the paper has at times come out in support of Labour, but it doesn't engage in embarrassing propaganda and cheerleading for one political party over another very often (maybe occasionally).
I would recommend the Guardian. On environmental issues, it is a leader with more in-depth coverage. Just don't expect analysis of latest company quarterly earnings figures.

well here is a crux for chile, what to do about the state owned mining company. there is a similar debate going on around funding banco estado.
https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/40-ye ... 00625.html
on the one hand I am a bit concerned that cutting codelco loose in the market might lead to higher taxes; but, on the other I think these state dogs need to be privatized as they are fairly consistently loosing money and piling on debt for lack of options to go to the market for more capital. they can issue bonds, but not stock for instance. otherwise the government has to inject capital.
plenty of governments get along just fine without needing to own such companies. there are a lot of legacy socialist companies that could be sold off, zero the national debt, and still provide a revenue streem in taxes and royalities. the gov could still be a sharholder if that is the way to go. my guess is there is at least 100 billion dollars, probably a lot more, in state owned companies and government assets that could be freeded up.
most people don't realize this, but for instance military owns a whole series of private hotels and vacation resorts for officers. pinera tried to sell some of them durring the last administration. think the prices were too high, but they are not essential in anyway to the function of the military. There are way more none core state assets being waisted in goverment hands.
the state energy company, railroad, and there are probably a lot more that are being half ass run and could generate a lot of money for the government.

The railroad is having a go. A friend works for them and is part of a team which has put together a deal with a Chinese company manufacturing trains, trams , trolley buses, light rail etc with the railroad company being the agent for Latin America. He´s in China now further familiarising himself with it all.
