seen some further stats regarding cars.

1 million used cars sold in 2018

so, 1,500,000 vehicals sold

considering auto sales takened in almost every other country in the world, that is pretty impressive.

los rios had a 48% increase in new car purchases? what the hell are they doing in los rios?
I'm still puzzled where all this money is coming from. Valdivia has transformed a lot in the last 4 years. When we arrived, 30-40% of the stores and restaurants were not present (especially the ones with fancy "globalized" food). I ordered a PC from Santiago because we didn't have any electronics store beyond overpriced Falabella and Ripley in the mall. Now there's not only a PC Factory but also Reif — Apple's reseller. And a second mall is being constructed.

The region still has no significant industries (it's one of the top-3 poorest in the country). The city still has no income beyond students and tourists. But I keep seeing more and more really expensive cars (especially SUVs) on the roads, the ones you usually see in Las Condes.

The only possible explanation is the number of Santiago transplants I keep encountering. Valdivia just was selected as the best city to live in Chile, so probably even more are coming.

well, as a fairly new region, with a relatively small pop, the goverment money gets spread pretty thick. that university also has some fairly fat paychecks associated with it. don't under estimate the forestry and agro industry. they are sort of out of site out of mind, but have some coins in the pocket.

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-01- ... s-affected

78% of the country is living pay check to pay check, 70% of those say they are in debt; but, somehow it is still a wealthy developed country?

another article on the housing market:

https://www.latercera.com/pulso/noticia ... za/489352/

you simply don't get housing market like that unless there is a lot money sloshing around a strong middle class.
