What is this?

Post by RuneTheChookcha » Sun Sep 09, 2018 12:37 am

What is this?

Sells in Valparaiso, for 1.600/kilo, at the mercado central, the vendor sells also some more or less exotic vegetables, mostly Peruvian.

This is not just small potatoes, nor local potatoes (from Chillian). Means, not any kind of potatoes at all, tastes very different.

I've never seen them before, but would have guessed some kind of potatoe. Are they hard like potatoes, and do you cook them like potatoes? They look like some kind of root thing, after being washed and scrubbed. What do they taste like?

Olluco? Very likely. Yep, tried to boil them 15 min., and to peel afterwards (like with normal small potatoes) but they won't peel. Seem to have no skin at all. And taste differently, hard to tell like what. A bit like beetroot maybe.

Last year they (this vendor) had none of these. And the year before also. The most similar thingy was a small local potato, from Chillan, in the local JUMBO which sells from 1700 to 1900 / kilo. They in the JUMBO have some 5 to 7 varieties usually. So I thought this was yet another variety.

Once in a while the almacen down the street has something I've never seen before, but nothing much recently. Camotes are really good, and I always buy a bunch when they have them. Otherwise, they mainly have the standard red and white potatoes.
