By the way landed at SCL the other day, and noticed a hanger where they appeared to be washing the LAW airline jets. Like they were planning to go somewhere.

Re: chile's migration crisis
So, seems the left in congress is pushing through a law to stop the goverment from being able to deport anyone.
They are basing it on a bullshit interpretation a u.n. of human rights convention chile signed. No country in the world would have signed a convention that took away the soverign right to define who is in your territory; but, the left is going to give it a try.
Effectivly it would negate all immigration laws. All you have to do is make it across the line, and the goverment would be stuck with you.
What baffles me is the political sucide pact the left seems to have entered over migration. The polls show their own voters are sick of the migration mess the last administration made, but they just keep doubling down on it. Not just doubling down in migration issues, but it seems to be at the expense of almost every other major issue.

Is this the convention you had in mind? :admin wrote:

It seems that the *no country in the world* is only the US:After more than a year of discussions, the Global Compact For Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was approved by 192 members of the United Nations in New York on Friday.
All United Nations members — except the United States — have committed to a compact for safe migration. It is the first global document to tackle the issue and reduce human smuggling and trafficking.

Re: chile's migration crisis
It does not, in anyway shape or form, say or imply that a country gives up the right to say who and who can not enter or remain in their territory; nor the right of a country to create regulations and procedures to enter the country (that is exactly what it was intended to do ). Especially people that enter illegaly.
The left are trying expand the definition of "refugees" to include everyone that steps across the boarder.
Someone with a truck load of cocain is just as protected as a syrian with a legit refugee claim.
The haitens, venzueleans, and whonever else is currently in the country illegally, is really really here illegally. They have been given way more than one opertunity to obtain residency, starting with day they entered the country (not like chile's current immigratiin law was being enforced under bachelet), and everyday since until the deadline to file for amenesity expired. All they had to do was file.
If they are still here, they are up to no good. Throw them out!!!

Re: chile's migration crisis
Well couple of updates in terms if immigration news.
Chile at the pacific aliance meeting in mexico told the other members that chile was not ready for free movement of people among members. The bachelet administratiin had even floated the idea of the 4 countries issueing a common passport.
Word we have at this point from our contacts at immigration is there is no way the law will change by august 1st, and nothing is going to get passed until probably next year some time.
Again, they could still implement a bunch of admistrative changes that do not require a change of law. Lets see how that plays out.

Re: chile's migration crisis
Admin, my understanding is that a change to the immigration laws has been brought up by the government several times over the years, they make a big show of things with the regularization of your status and what not, but then eventually the topic just falls to the wayside. Do you think that is what will happen this go around, or will they be a legit change?
Re: chile's migration crisis
No, there is very much an immigration bill being worked on in congress.
There is also, for all sorts of strange reasons, a pile of political capital being spent on this by both sides.
The most reacent fight is over when immigrant qualify for public assistance. For example the march bono, housing subsidy, etc, etc.
For some inexpliciable reason the commies and socialist keep doubling down. At the rate they are going they will want to send a check every haiten that just thinks about moving to chile next. They dont even need to try to physicaly visit chile.

Re: chile's migration crisis
I stumbled across the following recently completely by accident, but suspect that it contains grains of truth:
Then I edited it to better reflect Chilean conditions:
Couple of comments:
They cant discriminate against Mestizos because most Chileans are of mixed race, even though they dont like to admit it.
There are actually descendants here of slaves who were imported in the days of the Spanish colony, but it was never an issue.
As for the disabled, given the general lack of consideration for them, I can sympathize.

Re: chile's migration crisis
Well here we are. August 1st, and no sign of any sort of changes to the law or procedures for immigration.
We are canvasesing all our contacts at immigration across the country for any news, external or internal, official and unofficial, and will post any news we find.
As of yesterday, our contacts confirmed that they were still using all the existing old rules to accept aications, and had no new instructions or changes.
