Thanks, but I'd like my cat in home, without dead animals around the house.Andres wrote:Stop feeding the cats; they will learn to eat prey; hunger is a significant motivation, for both animals and humans.gyroid wrote:My friend who had more then dozen cats said they need to learn from their mother how to eat their prey.

So, I'm going to try importing good cat food in case there's none in Chile.

Yes, good luck! I stopped for two hours on my way to Uruguay with my dog in Santiago from Canada and as we had to change airlines, i had to take everything through customs including the dog.
Chile confiscated everything including canned dog food, dry dog food and dog biscuits. They were searching most peoples luggage the day we arrived. Even though we were not leaving the airport and were taking off shortly they still took it all. Said it was not allowed in Chile.

Re: Pet food choice
(From my experience attempting to import something else) if you find a Chilean government document which says they should permit you to import it, don't expect them to follow their own laws, regulations or oficios, even if you have a copy of it to stick in front of their noses and it is totally unambiguous.

Re: Pet food choice
Feeding pets cooked bones is almost always a bad idea. They do get brittle. The exception would be cow bones. some of the bones are extremely thick and can not be opened by the dogs so thats when I cook the marrow out of it. Sorry for not mentioning this earlier.

Found this:

And this:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/v ... _pf_ce.pdf
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/v ... ce_req.pdf
Does the food for people have strict requirements too?
What if I try to order my favorite peanut butter from US?

Re: Pet food choice
Ok, so the main choices of cat food here are:
* Whiskas (poison)
* Nestle Purina (can go to hell and feed hellcats)
* IAMS (no opinion)
* Royal Canin (Argentian one)
* Hill's: regular and Vet Diet (not suitable for daily feeding)
* and local brands (don't trust them)
We switched to RC and hope Argentinian one is not that bad. Maybe you could find regular Hill's in Santiago, but all the online shops are out of stock.
Actually only Hill's and RC ever had some big studies on pet diets, but still I'd prefer Hill's over RC because it's made in US.
