wooden statue of woman with children- Gabriela Mistral?

Post by anteojito » Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:18 am

We are going to be in Chile in June-July this year. One of the things my wife (born in Chile, left as a little girl just before the golpe) wants to see is a statue of a woman (She thinks it is Gabriela Mistral)in a circle holding hands with some children. Apparently it is made of wood. The Suegra has a picture of it from her last visit but can't remember where it was. I have done google searches but have not found anything like it. Does anyone know of something like that?

Chile is a very, very long country. It would probably help if you were more specific as to where your wife has and hasn't been.

This is Gabriela Mistral in Pisco Elqui. Not quite in a circle, but with some kiddies. Does that look familiar?

Regardless, as mentioned by jamie, the museum in Vicuña is very good and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Thanks everyone. I found that statue when I was doing my Google searches. I am beginning to think that maybe the woman in the statue that my mother in law saw was not Gabriela Mistral. I will see if we can jog her memory. At any rate I am going to add the museum in Vicuna to our itinerary if possible.

My wife talked to her mother and I guess the statue is in Quillota.

Then it is the carved tree. I guess they just call it "El Árbol". Not Gabriela Mistral but something to do with Portales.

I showed that to my wife earlier and she said that it is not it. There is some other wood carving thing. If we find it when we are there I will upload a photo. Thanks for your help though.

Intriguing. It didn't sound like what you described exactly but was wood and in Quillota. It is sort of amazing in itself, carved out of a fallen tree.
