Owls in Southern Chile

Post by admin » Wed Aug 26, 2020 8:04 pm

o.k., seems the pandemic has made all the wildlife near my house less inclined to social distance.

The big guy is a regular.

I took that photo of him from about 1 meter away.

I have photos of his wife hunting. about a year ago, she let me walk up to about a 3 meters away while she caught a mouse.

since the curfew, it seems like all the animals have come out to play at about 9 p.m.

last night I almost ran over a skunk. I did not even realize what it was until I was passing it. it was sitting, with black and white stripes, smack on the center line of the road. just looked like the center line. no one ever wins against a skunk.

had a couple of close calls with sheep in the road the other night. three big sheep, unshiered, jumped out in front of me. I am doing like 120 kmh, I slammed on my breaks and mange to slow to about 30 kmh and still maintain control. I thought to myself, 'well they got some padding, they can take a little bump and survive' . They jump out of the way at the last second.

There are three baby lambs behind them. now my breaks are as locked up as you can get with anti-lock breaks. I am thinking, 'hope they slide under the car'.

No sheep were injured in the making of this post; but, dang they almost got an early invite to an 18th asado.

Several foxes. lots of Libres. I am starting to give names all the wild animals that live around my house. most are like pets now, they are so regular.

here is a demonstration of how oddly domesticated the wild animals have become.

that blurr is my neighbors dog running by while I am taking photos of a wild animal. not the least bit disturbed by him.

one thing I have never been able to figure out. The owls in Chile don't hoot. I have at least three different species here, and none of them hoot like in North America.

First photo is a great one! We have rabbits now and then and there are some Southern Lapwings that lay eggs in our garden and the baby birds walk around for a while but never seem to make it, our cat seems to be the problem.

Inter-species friendship. Cynics would say the hawk was stalking the hapless chicken but the owl sat on Canela's back when there were no chickens around.

I give up, how does one post a photo? Easy please, it is great photo, also I want to post some animal pics in that post for animals

well there is a size limit of about 5 mbs, and if the width is wider than the length it will try to rotate the image.

the photos above were from about a year ago. that is the female of the pair of owls (her colors are a bit more dull than the male). she let me stand there while she hunted a rat at the foot of that fence.

I watch the two owls from my front window in the morning hunting. one skims the ground at like 10 feet, while the other hovers at like 50 feet above ready to pounce on whatever gets flushed out. they are like fighter planes working together.
