Shop owners put white balloons up through valpo as a sign of peace to end the violence, young people went along popping them and arguing with shop keepers.

Not even going to comment on that.

Given that most of the state bodies have gone on strike in one form or another during the last month, just suppose the Police collectively decided to protest in response to the lack of support from the government?

All it would take would be 24 hours of "Turnos Éticos" where most of them stayed in their quarteles.

Probably Constitutionally forbidden, but so what. Its no good anyway, according to some....
I wouldn't do that job for their $400.000-odd salary.

More big trouble expected this coming Tuesday is the word I hear.
There in part lies a big problem, how many police do you think will leave the force in the next months/years ? how many do you think will be signing up to join for 400k? What was that about not a lot of people here not being able to see consequences of their actions? Of course the criminals don't care, but the tacit approval from quite a lot of ignorant middle class people of the violence and the lack of support from government and the judiciary means serious problems are coming in the future with the force, that's not even considering the bs from higher ranks and the culture within the force.
carbinareios have been in a downward spiral for about the last ten years or so. lower quality recruits, tighter controls, lot of internal scandals, lot politicians throwing them under the bus.

the biggest problem with them however is the high ranking officers tend to come from the hard right, often elite families, and they could give a shit less about the low level troops.

the low ranking grunts come from the same areas the criminals do. if they had not join the carbinareios, they would probably be out burning and looting too.

there is also a problem with the carbinareios sending rural people to Santiago, and Santiago people to rural areas.

I have come across a few poor bastards in the mountains of the Patagonia on horse patrol, that it was more like the horse was taking them on patrol. Jumping trees and fording fast rivers, not the same as prancing around the parade grounds or parks in Santiago.

Possibly announcing a crackdown on criminal behaviour in the way of stiffer anti-riot punishments. Attacking military bases would warrant it and it would mirror what has happened in the longer running French protests that also mirror the same causes...inequality, lack of upward mobility, food and utilities cost top much, pensions are too low etc. Sound familiar? The anti riot laws were supposedly the tipping point that made it lose momentum. It has only resurged in the last few days due to the anniversary a few days ago. Yes France has the same gripes. Meanwhile minimum wage is 6usd a month in venezuela but gas is free in Caracas when it's available.

The Carabineros are not allowed to serve close to their home to prevent corruption and conspiring with criminals in their area, many of their school friends will be on the other side of the law. It's not so much Carabineros from Campo in Santiago, and Santiago in campo, although by Chile geography and populations that is probably the more common way it ends up.

Other South American countries only do this with federal police and not local police, leading to huge corruption with the Narcos.

The real problem is you'll be left with the violent ones who are loving every day of shooting and hitting protestors, and lose the ones that want to patrol the community and help it, as they aren't being allowed to do that, nor will be able to now every community who needs the help is turning on them.

Maybe some parrelels again with Northern Ireland where they misused rubber bullets and army to great disaster, they had to rebrand, rename and gut the police force before people respected it again.

Oh, is he still here,? Friggin idiot, had the chance to be a hero in this, had he handled it differently, could have been, should have been, would have been I guess.
Now will be remembered as the worst ever elected president in Chile.
Didn't bother even listening to him , still dont think he will do his full term.
Oh, by the way Happy Anniversary Chile, one month today since this all started, congrats on what you have achieved so far , a real example in these unequal times around the world.
