Trump gave serious consideration last year to invading venezuela:

By the way, it seems last month there was an attempted coupe in venezuela.

Here is a great article about the real diffrence between argentina and chile's society.

https://amp.ft.com/content/f654782a-835 ... a4754b5a0e

Argetinians have all become armchair economist out of necissity and repeated crisis. By contrast, there is no way i could strike up a even mildly indepth conversation with most my chilean friends about the economy (and some of them have economics degrees), let alone a taxi driver or my house keeper. Perhaps, a few years ago after all the damage was done, back when bachelet's crappy policies were showing up in their pocket book, they would grumble about the economy. Even then it was more of political conversation than economic.

Just out of curosity, im going to try an experiment and ask a few chileans if they know what the exchange rate is today. Just to see how many are even vaguely aware of what the dollar is at mas o menos.

Would be interesting if a few other forum members gave it a go to compare notes.

I need to do a chart on ARS vs. CLP and USD. It might have been better for Argies to bite their idiotic nationalist pride and preserve store of value in CLP especially since they do sooo much shopping here.

My interest overruled my laziness and I did the chart. I picked the beginning as November 1, 2001 when the original modern Argie crisis began. Of course smaller time periods will show USD leading but I believe this is the chart that tells the big picture story to the proud arrogant Argies.

Some sort of "linear" scale that shows the change over time. If either would have lost value against ARS at some time, the scale would show the same numbers extended below 0 or the lines would start from 100. I know when I only do say CLP vs. USD, the scale corresponds numerically with the official exchange rate but when combining currencies, the software automatically creates some sort of index to do the comparison.

In this chart, the software uses 100 as the baseline, the ARS never gained against USD in those decades, whereas the CLP kept its own and then some against USD except where it slipped below 100.

Last week I was at a small dinner party. just 6 people including my wife and I. Across the table was, letś just say, the south American head of a very large and famous company, that also just happened to be an Argentina national. About our second bottle of wine, he tried to convince me there was a lot of money to be made in Argentina. I told him, ¨im sure there is, but I am more worried there is a lot more money to be lost in Argentina". Most importantly, my money.

Perhaps another bottle, and I would have worked up the nerve to ask him why he lives in Chile. Overall, though a nice guy, with lots of great stories about adventures in doing biz in latin america. We compared notes on everything from brazil to colombia, and where we think they are going in the next years.
