seems to be a precaution, as the conditions were not set for a tsunami; and, if waves do reach the chilean coast, they are expected to be small.

they are predicting a possible 1 meter wave, and easter island would be first land fall in chilean territory.
I don't know if I would be too concerned about this. Might consider moving my beach blanket back a few more meters from the shore.

I wouldn't be too cocky just because it was near NZ.
It may be minor... however..
The 1960 Valdivia shake generated a tsunami that killed in Hawaii, Phillipines, and Japan

I recall seeing - on B&W TV - it making landfall at Hilo... when the warning was given there people went down to the seaside to watch it arrive... that didn't end well...
2010 Chile one just caused strange tides in NZ...

The Valdivia quake was what perhaps 100 times more energetic than this 8.1 in so far away NZ?
So the alert has already gone out on the phone system (mine alerted at 10 pm Chile time). Yeah whatever.
My departed Dad was born and raised in Hilo and yes the Valdivia quake caused a wave that destroyed an entire school with teachers and kids inside. That area today is prohibited for building.

seems the only place it 2as detected was on the coast of los lagos with a 40 cm wave.
