Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile
yesterday, when Putin announced they had a vaccine, my first thought was 'hell, no. not touching that crap'.
Then somewhere I seen the russians admit it was a rip off on the Oxford vaccine.
Then I thought about it a bit. That is actually encouraging. The FSB is not going to rip-off a crap vaccine.
still, going to wait and see if Putin's daughter grows two heads first.

This was on reentry after the expiration of my first PD carnet. I left SCL with a valid carnet for a two week trip to the States where the PDI official said nothing on leaving and then on return received the power tripper. This during the latter end of the "look the other way and stamp when it comes to Haitian 'tourists'" time period.papageno wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 4:23 pmIf that was at exit control at SCL, maybe we encountered the same one... In my case, it was the lack of a carnet because my temporaria was too new. Damn, that was 6 years agoeeuunikkeiexpat wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 2:05 pmWho also enjoy power games like the mujer PDI official who gave me a hard time because my carnet was recently expired. Dumb me, I should know better after dealing with US CBP that you avoid if possible the young and/or female officials if you don't want high blood pressure.![]()

peru is reimpossing a lock down. they had over 8,000 new cases in a day.
This article says peru is probing 27,000 deaths that were not included in the official numbers; but, I seen some local media claiming it is more than 50,000 additional deaths.

Bolivia passes 90,000 official cases. which given the limited testing ability should be terrifying in itself. up until about the last month they were reporting only 10,000 tests conducted, in the entire country.

Oxford seems the most advanced in the vaccine race so far aren't they?

You missed Colombia which is also at record number of cases and deaths! The neighborhood is very much on fire.
If all the Chileans (and foreigners in Chile) would have a look around, perhaps they would appreciate the COVID response by the government? Yes, they have certainly made mistakes (as all other countries), but if you look at the most important factor in my opinion - Deaths - then I would say they have done quite well. A large part of that is due to how they managed to drastically increase intensive care capacity across the country, which meant that the health system never collapsed. Keeping in mind that the Chilean numbers seem to reflect reality (excess mortality is very close to the official weekly numbers that include probable deaths), whereas I have very serious doubts about the stats in practically all the other LATAM countries.

Re: coronavirus (COVID-19) in Chile
well, on the vaccine front I am also keeping a close watch on old fashion dead viruse vaccines that are in trials, as I am not convinced this is the best time to reinvent the wheel.
Oxford had like a 10 year jump on the research as they were hunting for a "assembly line" method to develop new vaccines. As I understand it, they had dozens of tests of different vaccines for various viruses using this method in the lab and at least one that was aproved and in production. so, so far so good.
I guess my issue is like when people spend thousands of dollars installing "smart houses" AI technology, only to find out a simple light switch works better.

Yea, I am waiting for one out of Germany or somewhere with a little less corruption in the oversight process.41southchile wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 9:47 amFingers crossed this is not a propaganda story.
