Well Chile is in the top 20 of something. Recorded Coronavirus cases worldwide coming in at 18 and increasing up the charts by the week. I think Britkid is right and by the end of the month we will be seeing 80 to 100 deaths daily as it works it way through Santiago.
A third of recorded deaths in Chile have been in last 7 days.

62.7% of all deaths were in Santiago since the start,

89% of all new cases today are in Santiago

75.8% of all cases are in Santiago since the start of pandemic.

Clinics Las Condes has already shut down 7 ORs and set them up as 4-8 bed ICUs...they cross trained OR staff to ICU techniques.

They have stopped all elective surgery and cleared 70% of the Clinics bed preparing for the push....

then we got this fine piece of corruption:

https://www.statnews.com/2020/05/19/vac ... 9-vaccine/

the ceo was just appointed by trump to head up the vaccine effort, and magically a press release (not a medical study) sends their stock screaming over a possible vaccine.

shit I should try that. o.k. everyone, I got vaccine that I cooked up in my garage and tested on my neighbors dog, that may or may not protect you from covid. anyone want to invest in my new biotech company? we will be releasing an at home blood tests soon too.

I will invest. It sounds like you're already planning to do more testing than the final product we will all be treated to.

Are you guys paying full salary to your nanas? We've paid full salary in the first month, but we are now paying half salary for our nana to stay home.
Ours was only casual/part time , 3 days a week. Paid her the first couple of weeks , not paying her anything now, and she is not actually available now either because her kids are not in school, her husband works on the farm where they live so she has to look after her kids during the day now.
We have reduced extra casual labor in other areas too, that we had been using, and are only sticking with our original 2 guys that have been here for a few years, we have enough to do to keep them employed .
yea ours was a part-time 3 day a week thing too. we are still paying her full, part-time salary. she never wanted more than just a part-time gig, so she could take care of her family.

for the moment we have not had to cut anyone loose, but will see where this all goes.
Are you still getting a comparable volume of work after this all started? I mean, I assume that there aren't that many people moving in, other than tourists that were left stranded here when the border closure kicked in. But I think that the may be a larger number of requests for remote service, like through a power of attorney.
I work in Telcos and the volume of work has been huge. Not only implementing contingency or regulatory measures, but also taking the chance to implement all those projects that presented a risk before - no one is complaining if there are temporary conectivity glitches after we've finally shut off on premise servers and moved everything to oracle/aw cloud because the stores are all closed anyway.

so, somewhere on one of these threads months ago I proposed doing rolling lockdowns to control the virus and mitigate the economic damage. seems some scientists in Europe have modeled that, and it looks like it would work.

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/05/19/stu ... ategy.html

I actually think you could do that with shorter opening times. say 2 weeks. the population would be more tolerant if they had a clear schedule to work with / look forward to with a bit of "normal" while also keeping a lid on the virus. kind of small vacations from the pandemic.

our family was out for a walk with the dogs. as we were discussing the whole mess, my very sharp 9 yearold nephew piped up and said, "forget the virus, we are all going to die of boredom before the virus gets us".

He is kind of right.

Government report:

4,038 new cases, 53,617 total confirmed cases

85% of cases in Santiago

22,504 considered recovered

35 new deaths, total deaths 544

758 on cases on ventilators, 143 critical

390 ventilators available

12,469 tests in the last 24 hours, 409,669 total tests completed

Because there is essentially no other respiratory virus in circulation, they are going to treat all respiratory infections as covid until proven otherwise with a test.

They are going to change the breakdown of covid cases they are reporting, and report the following sub-categories of cases:

suspect cases

cases confirmed with covid by PCR test

and add a new catagory

probable cases: that is suspect cases, completed a test, but the results were indeterminate and another tests needs to be completed to be added to the confirmed cases.

Again treating all as if they had it until they have a negative tests

the minister of health is warning there will be a big jump in the numbers because of it.

all of above will be included in overall case count considered "contagious".
