so seems the u.s. gov is being pretty cagey with the details about this flight.

first they were supposed to be quarantined at the civilian airport hanger for up two weeks; now a military base?

one thing I might read in to it is, by using the military base, they limit the ability of the people returning to challenge in court their detention. federal property, under military law, , and if they do not admit them officially to the u.s., they can be held indefinitely. Guantanamo for bugs.

Australia and Nz citizens may have to go to Christmas island for Quarantine, some are saying they would rather stay and take their chances in Wuhan.

we actually have a quarantine protocol of for our own buisness. we used it back in like I think 2009 with the H1N1. no one that worked for us got sick.

we simply cancel all in person meetings. tell our employees to take their laptop and a printer if needed and work from home.

we also hired a private nurse back then to give everyone the seasonal flue shot. helps eliminate confusing virus symptoms with just ho hum seasonal flue.

back then online payments and a lot of other government processes were a bit hit or miss, but now they have gotten pretty good.

even under normal circumstances, 90% of what we do does not require in person meetings with anyone. even our employees. I have one employee I have not seen in person in like two years. she already works from home, so she can take care of her elderly parents.

I have however recently updated our quarantine procedures for my wife and I, after conducting in depth tests and emergency drills a few weeks ago.

My wife and I will take our fly fishing rods and isolate ourselves on a lake full of extremly agressive trout in the Patagonia, that has good cell phone and internet connectivity.

LOL

well it seems the clowns at the minister of health are on top of this as usual.

https://www.emol.com/noticias/Nacional/ ... China.html

they admit they had three suspect cases, but eliminated them as having the virus.

they are not going to use thermal checks at the airport.

they are just going to have the PDI, with their advanced medical training, keep an eye out for people looking sick.

you know the guys that could not detect thousands of haitens entering the country illegally right in front of them.

now, there is a very simple method to dramatically reduce the spread to Chile from China.

Chinese need visas from the consulate to enter. suspend all chinese tourist visas, just for a month or two. that would bring the number of possible vectors down dramatically, and just monitor everyone else coming in that had recently been in China.

It would take the possible people carrying it down from thousands, to probably a few hundred that need to be monitored.

Bahahahaha had to laugh at that, it's still pretty hit and miss here in Chile, in fact very frustrating a lot of the time . Things are often ok, then they decide to change something and there is about a year of problems with it. Not just govt either, business and bank online systems are very unstable I find. Just this morning I have had issues with TGR , Santander and Movistar wasting the whole morning due to their "systems"

So whats kill people is acute respiratory distress syndrome.
A good video explaining what this is (11 min):

Not only do I not know what's going on, I wouldn't know what to do about it if I did.

I mean by 'hit or miss' nearly none existent.

We use to have a girl that worked for us who's only job description was standing in line for us. banks, bills, notaries, etc. One of our law school interns spent so much time at a local notary in Temuco, the notary poached her. which was fine with us. she became the deputy notary, and now we don't have to deal with line at all.

we still have a junior in the Santiago office that does nothing but run documents around, all day every day; besides that being sort of the part time job description of various assistants, that do other things too.

If Chile ever joined the 20th century, using digital communication correctly, half the country would be unemployed; or, at least I would have half the employees. never mind all the warm bodies occupying the other side of the counter for no good reason.

so, experts seem to be disputing the need to quarantine an entire plane.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/28/heal ... index.html
Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatric infectious disease expert at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, said that when someone on an airplane is found to have influenza, fellow passengers are not quarantined.
"We don't do this for the flu, and it's known to cause 35,000 deaths in the US every year," he said.

He said quarantining the Wuhan passengers sends the wrong message -- that a new, exotic virus from a faraway land is more to be feared than one that is in our midst.
"I can't understand why they're doing this. It doesn't make sense," Offit said. "I think it sends the message that this is a virus that is particularly to be feared, that it's more likely to cause deaths than say influenza, which isn't true."

Analysis - Why don't we know the death rate?

By James Gallagher, BBC health and science correspondent

How deadly is this virus? It is a basic question, but the answer is elusive.

It is far too simplistic to take the 130 deaths and the 6,000 cases and come up with a death rate of 2%.

We're in the middle of the outbreak and thousands of those patients are still being treated.

We don't know if they will live or die, so they can't be used in these calculations.

We also don't know how many mild and undetected cases are out there.

"It is very early to make any statements on what the overall mortality rate may be," the WHO's Maria Van Kerkhove has warned.

Also, the deadliness of the new virus is only one component of its threat.

Flu kills hundreds of thousands of people each year not because it is super-deadly, but because it is able to infect so many people.

So they prefer to stay in some pestilential chinese hellhole rather than going home to mum and dad on a free RAAF flight with a 14 day holiday on Christmas Island thrown in. Thats OK by me.
That is the Indian Ocean Christmas Island not the Pacific one where they tested the H Bombs ... its the one with the casino aimed at the Singapore Chinese market....

Moving right along... I see a number of airlines have stopped flying to mainland China.... but are still flying to HK... that'll work.....
