For what it's worth, Pinochet was well liked among the people below the 42.5 parallel because he was responsible for constructing the Carratera Austral and building many bridges across rivers where none existed as well as plazas in the center of many small towns.
I have many friends here who to this day who still consider him to be a hero.
Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it.

Pinochet was thoroughly demonized by the Communists on a worldwide scale. They were so successful that even his ideological successors have disassociated themselves from his image.

The same weaponization of Human Rights is ongoing with Piñera and his government who are routinely catalogued as Assassins and Torturers. The Communist party have threatened to bring Piñera to the International Court of Human Rights. Ludicrous, but:

They are just fine with human rights abuses; as long as it is committed by someone spouting the party line like maburro, castros, Fernandez.

So true. If all you do is read the Intl press and wikipedia you'd think he was right up there with Caligula and other historical leaders that have the baddest of bad raps
But if you go and talk to real people that lived through it and are still here...and it's in a quiet place without other ears...they often say similar things.

It is sad that there is such a tendency to polarize and demonize leaders...almost always for worse and never for better

They threw people out of planes! They used the national football stadium as a torture centre! They made people eat their own shit! They forced people to have sex with their own relatives!

They didn't crack down on criminals! They were the criminals.

It's ridiculous that we are still having this debate.

That last comment is disrespectful to all the victims of the Pinochet regime.

People remember what was done to them or for them first. Not everyone has the luxury or the thoughtfulness to take a comprehensive view.

There is no debate here. The facts are that many people maximise the positive of Allende or Pinochet and there are people that maximise the negatives of both. Some are doing it from an ideological perspective and some are doing it from just remembering what was done to them or for them

Quite a lot do it for financial considerations. Anyone ignoring this sordid aspect of Chilean life is being naive.

so, they arrested a venzuelan, illegally in the country, for the fire in panguipulli that burned down the municipal durring the protests.

yea, that is not what foriegn refugees do that are desperate for new life.

You travel half way around the continent, illegally enter a country, travel to a relatively obscure rural town, then burn down the city hall.

anyone still says 18-0 was "spontaneous", is blowing smoke up your ass.
