What I did notice was that amongst all the panic posts on a travel website dedicated to Chile a very definite presence of a couple of brand new participants either linking to all the worst videos of what was happening in Chile or dire warnings about visiting. These people were, according to them, not in Chile nor had apparent plans to come. At first I put it down to someone with their head buried in the internet who thought that was where you found out about real life. But it was relentless and so strange that someone would take such an interest. You did actually have to follow their posts to see the pattern. The posts were subtly misleading. They only tailed off a bit, but did not stop, when people actually kept their plans and came to Chile. All that feedback was 100% positive. People changed lodging if needed, avoided certain areas, remained flexible and had a good time.

This sort of thing will never be a statistic as it is impossible to prove intent - there are plenty of useful idiots on social media - but can also do a lot of damage to a country with very little effort. Possibly this was just someone with particular political views and not some orchestrated attack, but it was impressive the number of posts and the ease with which people, unfamiliar with the manipulation possible on social media, gave these posts value. At this point fewer do because of the feedback from people who have actually come and seen with their own eyes.

This is only one small example of "foreign interference" but it must have been repeated on many different websites and blogs, A sort of death by a thousand cuts. I think the government is struggling to put a statistic to this, impossible, but it must be very frustrating not to be able to do so in any credible way.
Yup it's the world we live in now unfortunately , with being anonymous on social media, anyone, anywhere can do anything to undermine anyone or anything .

Democratic and free elections or any free vote for that matter can never exist again without some sort of interference, unless something changes in how we control the technology.

I've noticed a lot of suspicious activity on Chilean Expat groups on FB recently; in any discussion of the protests since they began, anyone critical of the protests immediately gets bombarded with angry replies from obviously fake profiles calling them "facho", "estupido gringo" etc, one one of these groups I ended up getting stalked by one of these profiles who told me to "get the f**k out of our country facho" and was threatening to "get me fired", and in another I was harassed by a similar fake profile through PMs who was eventually banned by the group mods. These profiles frequently post poorly-sourced anti-police/government propaganda, don't use Chilean Spanish and are clearly not from Chile, there is clearly some sort of disinformation campaign going on in Chilean social media.

well, the ones that can do something about it is twitter, facebook, etc; but, they refuse to because their entire buisness model is premised on it. Controversy breeds clicks and eyeballs.

Even the "useful idiots" are easily detected with the newer AI alogos, after just a few posts. They leave a pattern. I am not even talking about squashing free speech on the internet; simply stamping out bots and trolls to the point it does not pay to play.

99% of the crap that attacks this forum, you guys never even see. It get's blocked or deleted on contact. I am doing it with fairly crude tools. I don't have resources of google, Facebook, twitter.

Ironically, many of the same algos they use to track your every move to sell you crap, are the exact same algos that will detect the "bad" traffic and curb it. So, they know exactly who they are, they just have no interest in doing anything.

FYI, for the record I do believe K-pop to be a threat to the human species; but, it is not the kind of threat the government can do anything about.

Oh yes they can. In fact Pinera should resign over his abject failure to do anything about the K-pop threat!! It is the only answer #ChangeChileNow! /sarc

I am going to have to wait for my 15 year old niece to grow out of it.

luckily my wife and I have invested enormous amounts of time and money in exposing her to all sorts of other types of music over the years; now, hopefully, it is going to payoff quickly.

here is a sample of the problem of providing a quota to indigenous, basically we have no idea who they are where they live:

https://www.latercera.com/nacional/noti ... le/949002/

seems the vast majority live in the central region, the regions get screwed.

that is before getting to the men vs. women vote.

oh, and they are just going by last names that are "sort of indian" sounding.

across the south you will find a lot of clearly mapuch, with german last names, spanish last names. names mean nothing, especially due to the way they were historically assigned, or blocked by law. only in recent years were "illegitimate" children recently recognized legally.

so pinera signed the constitutional reform today that allows the vote for the new constitution to go forward.

still in Congress is the whole quota mess, but I suspect that will go through in some form or another.
