They just deported a couple Argentina reporters that tried to enter at SCL without a work visa, and among other things, there were images of them with weapons in their social media.

Think there is more to this story. That smells like the PDI had them flagged prior to their arrival for some reason.

but, it sure serve as a warning that the government is being super sensitive to foriegners screwing around in the middle of this.
The PDI let them in after human rights group showed up at SCL

yea, that whole thing was a bit strange.

not like there is a shortage. of foreign press in chile, or one more is going to matter.

I got stopped and checked in SCL by PDI, the first officer was having a bad day, was miserable but spoke hardly any English, so let me through after some intense questioning. Then a PA went out and I got greeted by two PDI who spoke English and started asking if It been to the North, guessing they were on about illegal mining workers, but no idea really. But they were pleasant as I had a lots of documents to show what It been up to and how I was well with in the law.

I know a friend who had his navy cap with him, whilst transiting through Chile, he didn't put it in his bag as didn't want to damage it. He got stopped by PDI as he didn't have a military guest visa. But he wasn't military or staying, just had to get through Chile to another airport.

I would say they are just very in depth and perhaps Argentines need a special visa to be journalists in Chile?

PDI is having the time of their lives this week. More on this later today, possibly in a dedicated topic.

Here is the thing.

The beurocracy in chile, is in many ways like a Fabergé egg. very intricate, at times beautiful (compared to the rest of latin america), but you sure as hell don't want to shake it very hard.

Everyone needs to brace for a very broken beucracy going forward, for a long time.

Especially now the entire cabinet is resigning. Even under normal circumstances, that tends to lead to career beucrats going to ground to insure they keep their jobs during a shakeup in their ministry. No one is very interested in getting caught or drawing attention to themselves, by bending rules to fix problems.

In many ways, what keeps the bureaucratic wheels turning in chile, is thousands of individuals, day in and day out, that are willing to apply a bit of reason to otherwise stupid rules and regulations to move the country along.

Under these circumstances, chile's laws and bureaucracy might be broken, but the laws of physics still apply.

Well you can change the politicians, but all the same civil servants who pull the strings their whole careers will still be there. The same in all countries. And no way around it, as you need experienced people to run things.

we are seeing some preliminary reports that some 78 foreigners have been detained for looting, and are to be deported this week by the PDI.

some 60 of which are venezuelans.

again, trying to verify this from official sources, but would not be suprised if this turns out to be true.

o.k., this is an interview with the intendente of los lagos region

http://www.ellanquihue.cl/impresa/2019/ ... incipal/2/

He is saying they have 56 foriegners arrested in los lagos alone, and they are working on deportation procedures.

He says people that are in the country illegally will be deported, and residents will be prosecuted. He leaves it at that.

I am not sure if he is playing coy, or simply ignorant of the process. we have rarely seen a foriegner charged with anything, temporary residency or permanent residency, that did not get an order to leave the country once the judicial process has run it's course from the department of immigration. It is independent of the court process. He even seemed to dodge the question, as that was pretty much what was directly asked by the reporter.

Although in his defense, it really has nothing to do with him directly or indirectly. Diffrent parts of the government. so he probably simply does not know.
