Perdiz chilena, Chilean Tinamou, chilean partridge

Post by admin » Sun Apr 26, 2015 7:35 pm

Ok finally got a photo of one of these and an id. My wife did not recognize tinamou, finally recognized "perdiz" or chilean partridge. Seems they are all over the country and there are people that breed them for meet and eggs.

There is a guy in chile here that raises and sells them. http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/836602/tinamous

I was primarily intrested in raising them as game birds, like we use raise pheasents in the states.

These guys provide hunting birds for populating fundos, along with just about everything else.

I have never seen them on the menu anywhere. I really would like to try them.

There's a customer of mine who trains bird dogs. He raises partridge to use for the training. He brought me a dozen or so eggs one time and I cooked em up. Taste was good, size smaller than quail eggs I've had, only about 1/3 mouthful each but novel for sure. LOTS of work to peel them though. Wouldn't do it again.

Yea my black lab mix that spotted them walking across the yard from the living room window nearly had a heart attack. That is the dog that is crazy gun shy, thought the two rabbits that ran in to her one day wanted to play, and the local fox gave the slip without even breaking a sweat. Fun to watch those latent genes come out. For a few minutes she was all bird dog.

PerdizChilena in Los Angeles are my sister and brother in law. They have about 8000 partridge. The eggs are excellent to eat and the partridge, like most game birds are a little dry. They also do a couple of very nice pates. If you contact them they're happy to package and send by bus. The birds are vacuum packed/frozen and each time they've sent them to us are still frozen when they arrive here.
