Why is there no canned soup in the supermarkets?

Post by cazzy123 » Sun Jun 06, 2010 6:11 pm

No canned soup in any Santiago supermarkets. Is this a cultural thing? Cost? Safety?

I believe canned soup is sold in other Latin America countries.

There are lots of canned soups in Jumbo and Lider.

Problem is the Chilean ones arent very good and the imported ones are really expensive.

Lider use to carry inexpensive Safeway soups and before that President s choice but now that they are Walmart the selection is rather poor.

You can get in the Mexican section crema de elote (corn) and I just bought cream of asparagus and cream of corn in the soup section, but I can't remember which brand. (Jumbo La Dehesa)

I'm with Greg, I prefer home made soup, but I like to have emergency backup for the kidlets.

@G no one makes soup these days because no one has time, they are either frazzled from working all day at their job or frazzled from running the welfare/unemployment gauntlet all day.

g~j must disagree...
g~j propose that everyone Has time, or can Find time, or can Make time...
...for Soup.
Frazzled or Not
Making soup will allow a focus away from frazzledom...
Opening a can will keep you in frazzledom?
Making soup allows for some extended mindfulness...
How mindful are you opening a can?
Making soup lets you remember (and control) what you are really eating...
Does anyone even bother to read the ingredients in a can (if so, you might not eat it)?
Making soup will lead to better nutrition...
What's in that can - besides lots of salt and preservatives?
Making soup will lead to better flavor + many compliments to the cook...
Does Campbell's care about flavor or compliments... or maybe market-share and profits?
g~j also bet kids will like it more... and it will wean them off cans.
"Emergency back-up"... sounds like having some fast~yummy left-overs in the fridge for a few more days...
... and how about freezing a few small containers?
Betcha an emergency back-up - by microwaving a small container of frozen soup - would be just as "convenient" as opening a can and heating it up.
OK allchileans... enuff suggestive~soup~solipsism for now...
Sorry OP and others... you will get no sympathy about (lack of) canned soup from g~j
Today, g~j will practice what they preach...
A nice big pot of sopa de mariscos... fresh(mixtos) ingredients courtesy of the local fishermen, with fresh veggie contributions from local farmers... good for today - and surely another day, too.
Bon appetit...

fresh(mixtos) ingredients courtesy of the local fishermen, with fresh veggie contributions from local farmers...
beginning in these high snowy mountains
a pure stream happily runs
towards the great ocean
absorbing, taking in, and washing away
industrial waste, human refuse..

bon appetit, dear mariscos!..

growing in this green grassy valley
from the "good" and the "right" seeds
that were messed with by the "good guys"
that were treated with the "good things"
watered by "good" and "right" water..

bon appetit, fresh veggie!..

now I need some water for my soup..
a bit chlorinated.. so what then?..
a bit fluoridated.. so what's wrong with that?..
the "good guys" would pump me but the "right" tap water
through some "good" and "right" plastic tubes..

bon appetit, dear me!.. I've got a nice big pot of it!..

Making soup will cause nothing but bad thoughts..

Opening a can allows for momentary spark of mindfulness..
How mindful are you making soup?..

Opening a can lets you remember (and control) what you are really doing..
Does anyone even bother to think about the "ingredients" in a soup?..

Opening a can will lead to better coordination..
What's in that soup - besides lots of frustration?..

Opening a can will lead to better understanding of its true nature..
Does the Soup Maker care about understanding?..

I think that the canned soup is quite an American habit. It is much better to make a fresh soup (and it is quite easy). And this is what people in Chile seem to do, this is why they don't need canned soups.

I usually just make a huge pot of soup, and freeze individual portions. That way when I don't feel like cooking or just want something quick at lunch, I pull out the freezer bag ahead of time, let it thaw some and then heat it up. It may not be quite as tasty as when fresh, but it sure beats canned preservatives. As for Chileans, they seem to be big fans of package soups - Lipton Soup styles, you know? I've seen alot of them use those, which I suppose could be considered a dehydrated soup can of sorts.

Maybe is cultural thing and people like to eat soup made from fresh materials instead of heavily modified products which contain carcinogenics such as monosodium glutamate?

Alas the amount of herbicides used in the farming industry is not small.
