Better would be to ask the check-in agents that handle that flight at the airport.

Book a one way flight with points. That's how I made the transition from flying from the states to flying from Chile.

Either way, let us know how it goes.

Strictly speaking, they are legally allowed to request a return ticket, although it should be possible for you to purchase a fully refundable ticket if the check-in agent gives you trouble. If you don't have money to buy one on the spot, then you may have much bigger budget planning problems for your trip anyway.

If cost is an issue have your SO buy a bus ticket to Mendoza for you, send it up and so them you will be leaving the country......

This issue is especially relevant to Air Canada that has been fine by the Canadian Government for allowing people with one way tickets on flights that became "refugees" on landing in Canada, they are a little sensitive....
