Anything at all (keep it clean) goes here that does not fit in to any of the other forums.

Anything open May 1st?

Post by StrawberryHeartsForever » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:59 pm

I was going to do the weekly shop today but have been caught out. Everywhere closed at 7.30pm, even the smaller shops. I have nothing for onces, the cupboards are bare save some rice and onion and palta...is anywhere open tomorrow in Santiago (places to eat etc) or am I going to have to concoct some rare new dish with the aforementioned ingredients?

Small shops might open - OK Market if you have one near you, Big John maybe - but that won't get you much more than snacks, drinks and bread. A friend swears Lomit's in Providencia is open tomorrow and has invited my husband to lunch, so we will see! Hotels have to provide some restaurant service for guests, so, worst case scenario, off to the Hyatt! :)

Aw thanks for the responses guys, I will venture out later. I am in Providencia, so there are several restaurants here and a Big John ;) I feel so embarassed, this has never happened to me before and my cupboards are so bare  I feel like a bachelor. Enjoy your day.

P.S. I love the idea of Popcorn for lunch.

Just learned that cinemas, petrol stations and restaurants are exempt from the obligatory holiday. So if a restaurant wants to open, it can.

For future reference: the farmer's market feria we usually have on Tuesdays in La Serena was open today, and doing a brisk business. Today they even had young goats for sale (dressed meat, whole baby goats i.e. cabritos), which is not a normally available item. If you go at almuerzo time, there are always people selling empanadas etc.
