after looking at what is going on in mexico closer, they seem to be classifying anyone that has been in china with in the last 14 days as a suspect case.
This classification seems a tad futile. Suppose someone has not been to China, but inadvertently spoke to someone who was in China, and got infected without symptoms yet.

I think this is the cull of our era, quite natural actually. Gaia (nature) eradicates species every now and then as a sort of self-cleansing action. Our foolish egos tell us we can contain the omnipotence of nature.

so I was aware there are certain viruses that in relatively healthy people their immune system to go in to over drive. I had not come across any descriptions of that with this bug.

seems it does do that in limited number of cases:
https://focustaiwan.tw/sci-tech/202002090008

the thing to watch is if this bug mutates and gets good at doing this.

so I am taking this study with a bit of a grain of salt, but if 138 people they are claiming 41% contracted the virus in the hospital, both workers and patients.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/f ... erm=020720

there are a lot of other explanations.

this black swan has the bird flue.

well, the virus itself is probably the least of the worries. The global economic impact is shaping up to be totally disproportionate to the virus so far.

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... it-nations

companies are starting to halt production lines at factories around asia for lack of parts. service sector gets nailed. tourism and travel getting smacked down. real estate in china is at a standstill.

a global recession, if even short one, is a real possibility.

so a obligatory ranking of countries preparedness to handle the coronavirus.

https://www.biobiochile.cl/especial/lo- ... irus.shtml

chile is ranked 27, second latin America, first in south America, with Mexico 28.

obviously the bigger concern is countries like Venezuela, el Salvador, Haiti that hardly have a functioning medical system on good day. Then also, in those countries, this virus is the least of people's worries there.

The other day I seen this click bait article alarmist headline like "brazil faces coronavirus and an even deadlier virus outbreak". like something even worse was coming.

I open it, to find out they had a case of hantavirus in brazil. hell, I can go to my shed and get hanta. It has been all over the world for decades, including the United states and europe. In fact, hanta is likly to kill more healthy young chileans this summer than this coronavirus ever will (think we are at like 12 cases in 12 months).

FYI, most those cases of hanta in chile come from two places / behaviors.

one is right around winter. people in rural areas start going in to their wood sheds again, that have been closed for months. The mice also about that time start looking for shelter.

the other, is people from the city, go out to rural areas and do stupid stuff. campgrounds are major source just about every year, but just in general they start disturbing what is mouse territory most of the year.

I was at a neighbor's house visiting couple of years ago down the road. my neighbor is from Santiago and has a summer home here and she had her grand kids down. boys 7 and 8 years old. I look over across her yard, and not only were they crawling around on their hands and knees under a big bush, but grandma has purposely cut tunnels in the bush for them to play in it. I just asked, "are you nuts"? and explained why.

It never even occurred to them how risky that was. that brought playing under the bush to an abrupt end.
