Antofagasta PLC : new mine in Minnesota

Post by frozen-north » Wed Sep 12, 2018 11:09 pm

Antofagasta PLC, a Chilean-based mining company. ....seeks to mine copper, nickel and other metals in an underground mine located near Birch Lake, southeast of Ely, Minnesota

This project lies within the Rainy River watershed, an area where surface waters flow north through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and other parts of the Superior National Forest, as well as through Voyageurs National Park.

Antogasta’s flagship mine, Los Pelambres, is responsible for many toxic spills in the Coquimbo region. The most serious occurred in 2009, when the mine dumped 13,000 liters of copper concentrate directly into the Choapa River.

According to the Chilean Archeological Society, Antofagasta also managed to destroy an enormous amount of human history when it dug up boulders bearing thousands of ancient rock paintings and buried the ruins of extinct cultures in order to construct a waste dam.

Two more lawsuits were filed against the federal government Monday for its recent decision to reinstate expired copper-nickel mining leases next to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area — bringing the total to three complaints that altogether represent five environmental groups and nine Minnesota businesses.
