Maybe targeting the UK prior to Brexit....
A Chilean crime network ransacked houses in the UK in 'burglary tourism' wave
Metropolitan Police are searching for the British-based leadership of the South American gang after multi-million-pound raids in London, Wales and Somerset
More than 75 Chilean burglars have been arrested in the past two years in the UK
The gang is thought to be active in several European countries, including Spain, as well as the United States and Canada. The thefts have also been linked to a corruption scandal in the Chilean capital Santiago involving bribes to police.

more money there? no prison industry ready to gobble them up forever like in the US? don't need winter clothes like in Canada? maybe fewer surveillance cameras? or maybe just a little fake news to tweak our realities to the agenda of that corporate media?

Chileans do. Try reading the local press. I personally know of one guy in my town that netted enough cash to live on for a year from his most recent trip. So not fake news and not new news either.

Metropolitan Police Detective Inspector Tim Court, who is heading the nationwide response, said: “We put the message out to immigration and border force.

“The big question was ‘where is this stuff going?’ We intercepted a series of boxes going back to Chile. Hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery.”

This is fromthe Sun. Rags like the SUn and the Daily Mail when they are putting things in direct quotation marks from people, are not usually making it up.

If you do want to read such sources, be very careful of the content in general, but focus on what the sources are and what's in quotation marks. If it's an official quote, at least that part of the article is usually legit.

Thieves flown into UK from Chile for burglaries
That's from the BBC

Interesting to see that they ship the loot back to Chile. My theory is that even the well-off here have no problems with buying obviously stolen luxury goods.

I think the reason that theft is so widespread here is because there is a ready market for stolen goods. Many people, even quite educated ones who ought to know better turn a blind eye to the origin of items acquired informally.
