Chinese corp. wants to build an electric car factory in Chile

Anything at all (keep it clean) goes here that does not fit in to any of the other forums.

Ummm, look at Maersk, that is probably the most significant assemby/manufacturing plant in recent Chile history. They are one of three plants in the world producing Maersk refrigerated cargo containers, the other two are in China.

Maersk drew upon locals from Melipilla to San Antonio and trained most of them for the job.

If it's for me then I went overly sarcastic above. Of course Chileans can do all of this and much more.

Just look at all the complex systems they build and manage and then look at other countries at this level of development.

Both the expats' bashing and the locals' self-deprecation are exaggerated a.f.

Yes, why not? To be honest this constant shitting on everything Chilean feels tiresome.

Especially considering that you has already left for the righteous Anglo country where everything is perfect.
You're right.
I have nothing to gain by hanging around here.
It became a habit.

Maersk plant closes - 1200 laid off. So much for that. Chile remains a resource extractor with a little value added to some of it. Piñera, please help to change this.

Yeah, what happened there ? Heard that on the car radio yesterday . It's more an oversupply in the world wide container industry from what they are saying as opposed to anything to do with Chile, would that be right ?

They said oversupply of containers and difficulty in finding locally sourced materials.

So more of an ominous sign of world economic activity. Finally, zero hedge's and other scare mongers claims for the past couple of years on the supposed collapse of world shipping rings truer.

If it were just a temporary container oversupply, Maersk could have mothballed the plant. More likely, they decided that importing components from abroad, in the absence of local suppliers would always be slow and uneconomic.

Chile cannot compete with the Chinese when it comes to production or energy costs either.
Perhaps even in China, Maersk itself finds it tough competing with the local producers.

A strike that paralysed the plant last year for nearly a month, only two years after its belated opening did not help.
One of the union negotiators, in a TV interview last year during the strike mentioned that Maersk had talked about closing.
He probably thought that was a bluff....

Yet another foreign enterprise pulls the plug.

No. But the text didn't make that clear.

Hey the unions in chile have been running hard with the new union law bachelet paased, but not getting very far.

Guess what happening now?

The workers are paralizing companies, not getting new contracts, and then it is coming back to bite the union in the rear.

They are just going to close or automate their jobs away.

But building containers is a hard one to compete with anywhere. Way too much capacity in china.

Nah. It does still say 'Chile'. I wonder if somebody will eventually notice the mistake.

I was wondering why nobody in the forum had mentioned the new Chilean plants. :)
