I'm thinking financial problems, bankruptcy, a broken investment scheme, a broken business venture, yes even tax issues or something along those lines.

This morning's article said that this thing will be decided in the next hours but no word of resolution as of this hour.

This is the best local drama since Ocean Breeze got beached.

Yeah right, must be some Chechen or Yemeni family radicated in the States now, claiming they neither get well treated by U.S. enforcement agencies there or being booed at a local Starbucks

over 1/3 of all residency visas for us citizens, and only us citizens, was religious visas last year. can not recall the exact number but out of something like 3000 visas for us citizens, over a 1000 were religious visas.

the problem with those types are, most have no money or they would be applying for another type of visa. could care less that they are here for religious reasons (and i have my doubts about how many really are), but it means most in one wsy or another are expecting chile to support them or their family or are acteully intent on sending money the other dirrection to some relgious organization in the states.
mormons
If zer0nz meant that most of those religious visas were probably Mormons then I agree. There are about 10 different Mormon missions in Chile with about 100 to 200 missionaries each and more than half of the missionaries are from outside of Chile whether it is from the US, Europe or other countries in Latin America.

Plenty of Jehovah's Witnesses from the USA in my neighbourhood. Never had a Mormon come knocking.

Asylum visas aside, the missionaries from different religious sects sending their army of "money gathering" or begging for money collecting a good chunk of change from abroad countries. I remember back in the 70~80's in NYC, they were many _World unification church's_ cult followers soliciting money from the big apple's passer by 's in exchange for folkcraft goods or flowers offered.

Rev. Sun Myung Moon, Self-Proclaimed Messiah, that Korean preacher or reverend whatever he is called made a lot of money using these naive youngsters set aloose every day on the streets of New York to work for him! The mass-weddings among the followers of his church was a eyesore to watch..So these jehovah witness cult plus the Mormons etc. performing there in Chile gathering money for their respective churches?

OK, so the Embassy has offered to issue them emergency docs so they can enter Chile under a tourist visa, if they refuse, they will stay onboard. They may possibly touch Chilean soil tomorrow or Friday.

The Mormons get their money from their members, you work they expect you to give 10% of every paycheck to them by agreeing to have them take it out through your work. If you don't agree they struggle to help you out if you are a member and need help with food or clothing. They also have here in Utah at least deseret news, deseret books, seagull books and the deseret industry which also funds the church since they own them. What they do in Chile is just try to get more members, but all the missionaries I know who went to Chile did more purchasing of goods then trying to get people to join  I even know one who got a tattoo while on her mission there.

According to:

http://www.lacuarta.com/noticias/cronic ... onio.shtml

They are Christian Protestants.

They must accept emergency docs from the US Embassy and enter Chile as tourists and only then can they ask for religious asylum, the decision subject to the authorities. If they refuse the docs and condition to enter as tourists, they cannot leave the ship.

And Hybrid, it is a NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) Line ship, Marshall Islands flagged, that started from Japan with a mainly Filipino crew.

Hmmm, NYK lines, I remember watching a movie made based to the life of " Japan's Consul, Chunei Sugiyama" stationed in Lithuania during the WW II..Despite his order from Tokyo, he defiantly disobeyed and helped the Jews in issuing Visa stamps to more than 6k of them!

The ink container ran out of fluids, his Visa signing pen broke, but he kept on giving stamped Visas to thousand of Lithuania Jews coming to him begging for their life..The Red Russians were crossing the borders and they were decimating the Jews!

Then it was the NYK lines also taking all these Jews aboard and leave eastern Europe to the land of rising Sun..No European nation at that time allowing Jews to come ashore, the story told...

"For 29 days, from July 31 to August 28, 1940, Mr. and Mrs. Sugihara sat for endless hours writing and signing visas by hand. Hour after hour, day after day, for these three weeks, they wrote and signed visas. They wrote over 300 visas a day, which would normally be one month's worth of work for the consul. Yukiko also helped him register these visas. At the end of the day, she would massage his fatigued hands. He did not even stop to eat. His wife supplied him with sandwiches. Sugihara chose not to lose a minute because people were standing in line in front of his consulate day and night for these visas. When some began climbing the compound wall, he came out to calm them down and assure them that he would do is best to help them all. Hundreds of applicants became thousands as he worked to grant as many visas as possible before being forced to close the consulate and leave Lithuania. Consul Sugihara continued issuing documents from his train window until the moment the train departed Kovno for Berlin on September 1, 1940. And as the train pulled out of the station, Sugihara gave the consul visa stamp to a refugee who was able use it to save even more Jews.

You know why there are not more "asylum" seekers in Chile?

It is not that Chile will not provide asylum under the right circumstances. It is just that guaranteed some moron at immigration is going to tell them they have go home and legalize some (totally irrelevant) document. I could see someone like Snowden showing up in Chile, and being told that he has to legalize a document through the U.S. state department in Washington in order to apply for asylum.

Seriously though, U.S. Protestants accidentally lost their documents and showed up in Chile to claim religious asylum on a freighter. The whole thing smells, and hopefully Chile's bureaucratic bullshit shield will kick in, to kick them out.

The Ironic thing about the American "Christen" extremist, is they seem to think Chile is some conservative Christen paradise. Most are seriously disappointed when they find out the majority of Chileans don't even go to church, let alone "behave" like "good" Christens. In fact, most don't even qualify as "bad" Christens.
