Wow a 1989 VW combi with odo round the clock for $6500 what a bargain! Didn't know used vehicle prices in Chile are so affordable! You will be gettin' many offers despite your bargain price. Good Luck !

Be nice.

Everything depends on the condition of the vehicle. If it is reliable enough to tour patagonia for months, then probably all the major parts have been rebuilt or replaced. The paint certainly looks more recent than 1989.

hey, they are legendary for how easy they are to fix.

Still, probably more in the collector / nostalgia / restoration market sort of thing. Kind of cool to say you drove a VW van around south america. Grab a few cans of spray-paint, and give it some new character. Think the price is a bit high, but not completely out there.

Would it be my first choice for a Patagonia expedition? Probably not, but for someone it would be cool.

It’s about everything you get from the van: freedom from the monotony of cubicles and suburbs; such non-material luxuries as beauty and silence; and, some claim, even inner peace.
"Escape from it all" intensifies.

Buy a van and get your inner peace today! No effort required!

You're gonna be faking it without a couple of weeks in Rishikesh/Kathmandu to begin with :)

A fad indeed. No new VW vans are being made. So prices are pushed way up.
A few quotes from that article:
Amber Badger and her family bought their 1975 Volkswagen Kombi Campmobile for $22,500, then paid an additional $10,000 for the engine rebuild.

Hagerty lists the average value for a 1954 VW Transporter (four cylinders, 30 horsepower) minibus in good condition at $23,100, though the best examples are worth $70,000 on average at auction.
Gee, for that price I would get a much more recent used mercedes sprinter. You would not have to downshift to first gear to go up a hill.

yea, at those price your in to an land cruiser or something similar.

But, I guess someone that was ambitious could buy this VW, drive it back to the states (older than 25 years old), then sell it there (sure there is a lot of homework to be done with that).

One thing I am rapidly coming to understand, in the used vehical market, is that the price of used vehicles in Chile is sort of proportional to the type and use. Chileans do not like anything even slightly old, and they really don't go off-road much. For example, they will buy a high-end 4x4 whatever, then drive it around Santiago for a couple of years, then sell it or trade it in often before the warranty even expires. I would bet that about 98% of all 4x4 suvs in the central region have never seen more than a few mins of dirt road in their life, and probably almost none of them have ever been put in to 4x4 mode. In fact, to a point that you need to be careful that 4x4 modes have been used and maintained so things like the seals have not dried out or whatever; but, if you know what to look for, there are a pile of used 4x4 with 100,000 km on them or less, and no hard off-road km on them.

Chileans from Santiago see a dirt road, and run away like they are going to break their leg and never be found. I have actually taken a bunch of family and friends from the central region out in to rural roads in the south, and they immediately start getting nervous and fidgeting, and we are only like perhaps a few km at most from the pavement. Santiago thinks hard off-roading is driving over a curb.

Then add in the lack of DIY culture, and almost no one restores anything. If they do, they are often pretty poor restorations. It has me kicking around the idea of buying some classics that are in high-demand in the states or elsewhere, and shipping them out.

Four wheel traction then two wheels too but. Last time around going to Cal~Nevada Tahoe area for skiing, seen a front wheel drive vehicle roadside being chained for snow going, however, those clowns were putting the chains on the rear wheel but their vehicle was only : front wheel drive : go figure that out? Bwahaha...
