Line of lights far in the ocean at night

Post by RuneTheChookcha » Sun Jul 12, 2020 1:11 am

Is it possible that some fishing fleet, about 30 - 50 miles out to sea, around maybe 50 ships, some with white LED lights, some others with "normal" yellow lights, is visible from Valparaiso at night (clear skies, good visibility)? Only twice witnessed this, once about several days ago, another time about a year ago. So many lights, like a small city, like Con Con or Quintero, at night, from a distance...

just a theory, but the off-shore storms from time to time drive the schools towards shore, so the boats don't need to go out so far looking for them.

But must be only national ones? Chilean territorial waters extend 200 miles, right?

The squid calamar battle on Chilean high seas is more of a artesinal vs. Industrial than a domestic vs. International

Regarding the Ley Jibia, it could not be unnoticed from my dpto., as there were too many manifestations in the Caleta Portales (visible from the balcony) related to this. Regardless of the outcome of this lengthy process, cheap Jibia disappeared from street vendors here (was at 1.000 pesos / kilo in the past). Now there is no Jibia at all (maybe once a month, at 4.000 peso).

Yes, Chile has exclusive national control overall economic resources (like fish, oil, etc) up to a maximum of 200 nautical miles from the baseline.
Although all ships have a right to free passage and may loiter without economic activity.

China has actually been reaching further eastwards with their fishing fleets, they have been seen hounding the Galapagos recently.

Granted, that's still really far away from Chile, but I wouldn't rule them out of reaching further southwards in the future.
