Bank Card Theft Registered Mail

Post by Atlantis » Fri Feb 03, 2012 3:30 am

Hi everyone, I don't know if anyone has had a similar experience. A friend of mine recently opened a Banco Estado RUT account and gave a power of attorney to a (yet another) friend to retrieve the bank card and PIN and mail them to him in Australia because he was leaving shortly thereafter.

Turns out this other friend mailed the bank card and PIN both  in the same letter - albeit registered - and it has been five weeks with no sign of the registered letter. Has anyone had documents or bank cards stolen from their registered mail in Chile and does anyone know how prevalent identity theft is over there?

Thanks for that.

Very common, and that is why they make you show up to get your pin in person.

On a related note, the largest mistakes we have ever seen foreigners make in chile were related to the abuse of a POA. Stop and think before you give one out to anyone.

Thanks guys. Charles, when you say it's very common did you mean identity theft or missing registered mail?

Px, I've been told the person was not a Chilean but a German/Swiss living in Chile for many years and running a business. The POA was indeed a very limited one, only for the purpose of retrieving the card and PIN but, if after trying to track things down from both sides nothing works, he is considering closing the account and perhaps even consulting with Admin's lawyers.

Will keep posting the results.

Banco Estado RUT account bank card, and the PIN, are useless outside of Chile. The Internet "transfer" card, and the PIN for online bkg are different things, but there is no need to mail them, they (the info) can be sent by email. Why is there a need to mail Banco Estado RUT account bank card, and the PIN, that are useless outside of Chile, to another country.
