Since your chances of getting any back are slim to none, may we ask why you did it?

He was a good friend...

I still know his email, phone, workplace, previous workplaces, and we are connected on facebook, linkedin, and I know his contacts too. Not sure what I can do.

did you get a loan contract or did you just shake on it?

We have lots of emails as evidence but not a loan contract. It was all done as bank transfer and hence can be traced.

Initially, he summarized the amount he owned and a plan to pay back in emails. Later he stopped responding.

it depends. How long since the last email with the plan? How many emails or phone calls not responded to?

It is quite a different response required if he has been non responsive for 2 weeks vs 6 months.

No responding since Sep 2018. Before Sep he was always apologetic and asking for more time.

You can try and hire an attorney to collect, but unless you manege to negotiate / bluff your way in to repayment with a threat of a law suit it will be an expensive, slow, uphill battle. it is essentialy an unsecured private loan.

sometimes just a letter from an attorney will be sufficient to motivate them to pay, or at least negotiate. what my father liked to call a 'waiting for the other shoe to drop letter'.

when we run in to a situation such as this, where their is less than perfect legal leverage to start, we often try to negotiate a new contract or terms (for example a new payment schedule) and then get that in writing and notarized. If he fails to make the payments, then at least you are in a stronger legal position for the next round.

do not however try to do that on your own. Done wrong, you could end-up being sued.

If it were me I would start turning up at his house and workplace unexpectedly, reminding him to pay me back on social media where everyone can see it, leaving messages with his friends and family to tell him to contact me to pay the debt, put the word about that he can't be trusted, and just keep putting the pressure on and doing steadily more and more annoying things while staying on the right side of the law until they hopefully realize it is going to be worthwhile to pay me off just to get rid of me.

But that's just me.

You also need to keep in mind that there is a chance that this person could be a difficult personal situation, or just not have the money.

But if they say they have no money but do have a car or an iphone, then ask them to give you the car or iphone or sell it within a week. Otherwise they are full of it.

Make a record of all the information you can get about him and his friends and colleagues and work place, make a written backup record of everything that can see via Linked In and Facebook especially. This is so you still retain all this information if he starts trying to block you or getting his friends to block you. Make sure you have the information all stored offline.

Would be good to get a basic overview of what constitutes harassment, stalking, libel and defamation in Chile.
