I know where you can get a excellent cup of coffee in Chile Charles, but heaven forbid you´ll have to grit your teeth and go to Pucon! :) A US guy there has a roaster and imports beans from all over the world including parts of Africa, Asia, Papua New Guinea.... We use his coffees here in the hotel.

well then throw that cocain shippment overboard, so we can make space for some respectable coffe.

a friend from colombia came to visit a few years ago. she brought me a bag of some of the finest beans in colombia. my hands still shake from withdrawals just thinking about it. I have tried every bean in the americas, and colombia is something else.

FYI, the amount and quality of stimulants that country produces, explains sooo much about the culture.

so here is a zinger that places chile's corporate debt at 96% of gdp in this ranking. notice no comment goes with it vs. all the other countries:

https://wolfstreet.com/2019/03/23/count ... bt-to-gdp/

but the earlier post has what that breakdown of debt is. it is not 96%.

Dont know if it's the unseasonably warm weather we are having or what, but I came through Puerto Varas last night about 8.30 and it was packed, all the restaurants car parks full, supermarkets full, cafes full, mini traffic jams. It seemed like everyone was out spending and it's not even the end of the month and on a Tuesday night in March when supposedly everyone is under so much financial stress.

yea, Puerto Varas has gotten so packed recently, I just cringe at the thought of going there in the evenings. The days are bad, but the evenings the whole city turns in to a parking lot.

Most amazing is watching the traffic backup (as long as you are not in it), at both exits to ruta 5 for Puerto Varas as everyone comes back from working in Puerto Montt or wherever. It is pretty typical, say around 5-7 p.m., for there to be several kilometer long bumper to bumper line getting off the highway and in to the center of town. Even Frutillar is developing a bit of a line at the toll booth in the evening; but, nothing like Puerto Varas.

All that traffic, is fairly recent. Say the last 5 years, mas o menos.

That is a town with money, and lot's of it. Hell, they got an ice skating rink in the mall. You really know you have made it when you have one of those in Chile.

I was talking with someone the other day about new infrastructure projects that are planned, when I started actually listing them off , I realised there is quite a lot. Between both private funded through concessions as well as government direct funding around the Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas llanquihue lake area, and the total is probably over 5 billion USD in approx the next 5 years. I'm not even counting some I'm sure, or any in Los Lagos Norte, like the improvement to Osorno Puyehue highway which will become dual carriage way, or other projects further south in Los Lagos . That's also excluding residential and commercial construction projects, in fact its probably double that if you add all new building and construction projects.

Well anyone that uses Puerto Montt airport suspected this , the Santiago to Puerto Montt was the busiest internal route so far this year, and passenger numbers increased a third or nearly 90 thousand over Jan and Feb 2019 compared to same months 2018. At least they have already given the concession to the new operator and a new runway and airport extension begins next year. All internal passenger movements increased 20 percent year on year for Jan and Feb

Interesting figures there, thank you. So it says the average pay of the app 5 million for hire workers in Chile is 844 mil, or 1239 USD, or 1662 CAD. I know a lot of Canadians who'd be happy with that number, but have to work their asses off doing two or three jobs for less.

Some very healthy numbers there, looking good, another year or so of this and hopefully it'll be a two termer govt of this lot this time and really solidify the gains of increased prosperity . As long as the rest of the world doesn't stuff it up, anything can happen I guess.

Despite the good Chilean employment numbers, Argentina is doing better than Chile in terms of fighting extreme poverty https://howmuch.net/articles/people-liv ... verty-2018
