I also just had one of those exchange rate moments. I had two air tickets where I paid nearly $900 on the LATAM Chile site in pesos chileno on my no international fee US credit card. I had to cancel them because of a LATAM schedule change. The credit came back in the original peso amount which is then converted back into dollars, the end result, I made nearly $120 USD on the deal.

tiago-san, 700 ? Bwahahaha in your dreams. Every intl currency almost gaining against the mighty green backs. JPY when it was 222~225 against Dollar, I bought a bunch, now just watching iphone Ten as X going for more than US$1000.00 !?
JPY is so strong at 108 per Dollar. When I go back to Tokyo at the end of year, those Yen purchased when Dollar was at the helm will come very handsome for my spending there.. But as always, what is at the bottom will rise to the top, and hoping soon in the case of CLP...Amen.
I speak more in a daydreaming sense, I know it is virtually impossible in the short term. But it would certainly make me happy.

It would make my life easier, in some ways, if it went back to 490 like when I arrived.

I bet anyone with CLP-based income is happier with a strong peso.

1 USD =624.814CLP

I think there is a chance for us to break the 600 level before the end of the year, then watch out below!!!

Copper broke 3.10 a pound.

I was having a beer and watching the sunset with my brother in law in southern Chile the other day. A lear jet went streaking across the sky heading south. I just turned to him and said "the money's back".

The official government rates given at SII are at 624.99, while xe.com shows 621.11959 for the real-time exchange rate. I will keep checking the rates until December 1st to compare with the rates from last year, when I was planning my move to Chile (674.42160 on the day I arrived). Thus far I lost 8% in terms of conversion rate only, not accounting for the 1.5% to 2%-ish inflation rate.

I'm not going to be broke because of this, but I'm not going to be happy either.

xe I think is more live market rates. The the government rates, set by the central bank and published at http://www.bcentral.cl, I believe are set on daily basis. Some government entities, like customs, set a monthly rate (on like the 1st).

Of course none of us get those wholesale rates, as everyone involved wants their cut.

By the way, we have had some fairly consistent results with having our executive at the bank call the exchange desk in Santiago and negotiate a better rate than their published public rate, but you need to be doing a fairly good size transactions between dollars / pesos. Typically north of $10,000 U.S., and the rates get better depending on the amount and frequency you are exchanging.

That is crazy.

I thought I was doing good when the dollar dropped just before we went to Europe. We were being charged in dollars all month and putting it on a credit card, then had to convert pesos to dollars to pay off the credit card this month. It was like getting a rebate on the trip. I'm sure we got burned on all the conversion fees, but nothing we were going to do about that anyway.

I'm kind at a loss with the sunflower oil index here. Should it have any kind of relationship with the US/CLP rates, or is it just an extra tidbit tossed alongside the first graph?
