OCTOBER 18TH WARNING: Quick bans on the forum

Post by admin » Mon Oct 12, 2020 1:22 pm

o.k., so I am already detecting increased bot and spam activity related tp the 18-0 protests, and the vast majority, like 100% are from networks outside of Chile.

I AM GOING TO BE BANNING NEW USERS THAT EVEN SNEAZE WRONG, IF THE TROLL TRAFFIC GETS TOO OUT OF HAND.

REAL USERS, DON'T DO ANYTHING THAT GETS YOU CAUGHT IN THE CROSS FIRE.

This especially important for anyone under about 50 posts, or less than a year or two on the forum. I am going to ban accounts first, and not even going to bother asking questions later.

so, for those that do not know what I am talking about, here is what happened. last year durring the October protests, our server was hit hard with bots, spammers, trolls. Most had Russian and eastern european signs, but they were also using proxies out of other countries and regions. I doubt 10,000 russians an hour suddenly had an interest in moving to Chile, or any of the spikes in traffic out of other countries were even remotely legit.

so far, it seems pretty light. think they are busy with the election in the States; but, this will likely be the policy through at least the October 25th election in chile, but probably the end of the u.s. election too.

Chile Today reporting that they're under a large-scale DDOS attack, looks like the cyber war has begun in earnest.

yea, I have been debating for a while moving the forum on to its own isolated server where I can crank down the firewall and block entire parts of the world temporarily durring such times. I can do it now, but it is a hassle.

For instance, I have clients from eastern europe and china, so I can not just block all connections from those regions.

but, all those basement servers with a single ISP connection (half the country is hosted on such servers) in chile are just not equipped to hang in their in any sort of serious fight.

readying that post, they have been down since oct 3rd with a DOS attack?

we use a group of data centers in the states, with multiple blended connections and DDOS protection, along with a fulltime 24 hour staff dedicated to dealing with cordinated attacks.

I don't think forum has gone down ever over a DOS attack in 15 years.

Typically it goes down because I did something stupid (e.g. runaway backups, etc), then went on vacation and did not notice it was down.

Yeah it was a DDoS attack, surprised they aren't using some sort of protection eg. Cloudflare, considering how susceptible news sites are to these sorts of attacks.

so they hacked the government site:

https://www.emol.com/noticias/Nacional/ ... ackeo.html

but, acording to the brain surgions running the government, some how there is nothing to worry about, but they are going to force everyone to change their clave unico anyway.

Now, if it had been any other organization, I would think, 'that is a prudent measure'; however, because it is the chilean government, with chilean level of IT support, I am thinking, 'holy frigen hell, bet they are saving those passwords in plain text, on some half baked homemade encryption, with a dam windows spreadsheet, being stored on some public unsecured cloud server'.

yea, I have near zero respect for Chileans' computer skills, and the common trait of the few competent chilean techy I have ever met is they too have a healthy dose of total disrespect for chilean computer skills and IT practices.

o.k., somehow the more details they give, the less reassured I am.

https://www.biobiochile.cl/noticias/nac ... nica.shtml

had to chuckle, as they were basically reassuring everyone that they did not do what I described above. why was that everyone's first thought?

one of the comments below that article (no idea if it is true), mentioned the government had disclosed somewhere they were using a sha-1 hash. To make a long story short, that is probably a bad idea for something so important.

so, a big mouthed senator disclosed they did get the clave unicos database, but it was "encrypted".

guess the question really is now with what did they "encrypt" it with.

so my wife was telling me, the association of family law attorneys of chile was flipping out this morning, because among other things that password is used for uploading documents for highly sensitive family law cases to the court system.

you think some moron in the government would have stopped and said, "does using a single password for all government activity sound like a good idea"?

cue fake outrage and scandal from the opposition in congress in 3,2,1....
