Moving at last

Post by Mongo » Sun May 29, 2016 8:24 pm

Hi All,

I posted some time ago about moving to Chile, and just returned from an exploratory trip. I spent some time in Valparaiso, Santiago, and Vina del Mar. I plan to move permanently this September and plan to open a distillery, as Chile has a chronic rum shortage. I liked Vina the best, and was tear gassed in Santiago, quite by accident as the students were protesting having to pay tuition right at my subway stop, Catholic University.

I have not noticed a rum shortage in Chile. Visit any large hiper and rethink your strategy. Usually it is my next choice as it competes well at rotating oferta prices vs. Chilean pisco.

Being facetious with respect to the rum shortage.

Still, they have none of MY rum, which I consider tragic.

Is rum made with sugar beets or only with sugar cane?

Bundaberg Rum is from Cane Sugar. Bundaberg is right in the heart of the sugar cane growing area of Australia. Not sure about other rums, plenty of them.

I never thought of Australia growing sugar cane for Rum production? I always thought sugar canes growing in the tropics somehow?

Yeah lots in that region. I have spent a lot of time around those parts.

A bit of info about the rum itself. Horrible stuff, it'd make a sparrow fight an emu :)

Rum is usually made of molasses, sometimes with added sugar.
