MRI scan in Chile

Post by zaebis » Thu Mar 08, 2012 10:21 pm

Anyone knows how much MRI scan would cost in your neck of the wood in Chile assuming 100% out of pocket pay. Also how fast can one get it done (e.g. any waiting time )?

My doc suspected I had herniated discs in the L5 lumbar spine. I got an MRI of the Lumbar Spine for about $400 at Clinica Indisa in Providencia which is a REALLY good hospital, totally modern, and alot of the docs speak English. The service was excellent and fully modern. I made the appoint and they were able to get me in that same week. The total process took less than 45 mins. I was in and out fairly quick and the results are available literally either that same day or no more than 2-3 days. AND, after the results are ready you can take a copy of the results with you. They provide a written statement with the details as well as the digital disc with the actual recording of the MRI.

Excellent service, highly recommend Clinica Indisa...also! this was about 1 year ago but I doubt the costs have changed that much. PLease note that you can also call the Clinicas around SAntiago directly and state the specific test you need and they tell you the price. Clinica Alemana is EXPENSIVE, but Clinica Indisa (which is also a hospital for upper middle-class people here in Chile) was about half the cost.

Also be sure to remember that you want to do research for "Clinicas" NOT "Hospitales" as the hospitales are the public hospitals with third world, horrible service. I'm fairly sure any Clinica in Providencia, Las Condes or La Dehesa is a super safe bet for modern and excellent service.

I got one in Clinica Renaca about 18 months ago for a measly USD $350, if I remember correctly. Limited area, sinuses only. Bout fell out of my chair, that is dirt-freaking-cheap. Very professional, I recommend, two thumbies up.

Here in downtown La Serena near the hospital there is a little lab that just does MRI scans, with modern equipment and specialists to analyze the scans. My husband went in about six months ago for a lower back scan, it was about $500 dollars (I forget the exact peso amount). The subsequent 10 weeks of 2 hours 3-times-a-week of physical therapy were also in that price range.

Oh yeah, waiting time--my husband got an appointment within a week of the day he asked, (no urgency in our case) and there was almost no wait at the lab, just a few minutes (much better than going to the doctor's office!). We also received a written analysis by the MRI spine specialist and a CD of the scanned images. I believe they were ready the next day or the day after.

About $1000 for one leg at the Clinica Las Condes several years ago. Can't remember the waiting time.

Anyone know of a good physical therapist between Temuco and Puerto montt? I may be leaving the U.S. before I get this sorted (post op rehab following rotator cuff repair to be performed one month from now)

I hate to use weasel words, but as with so many things ,"it depends". As everyone says , "baby steps". Beyond that, probably best picked up again under a relocation thread.
