In 2008 I was told , and suspect it's true, that Argentina cut the Methanex gas supply because public opinion in Buenos Aires did not like the idea of selling gas to Chile with Argentina experiencing its own gas shortages. This despite the fact that there is no gas pipeline linking Argentinean Patagonia and the North, so they cannot use it themselves anyway. A classic dog-in-the manger populachero decision of the type that bedevils latinamerica.
I was also told that Methanex was only running at 40% of its production capacity as a result of the Argentine gas cutoff, even before the current events in Magallanes. I wonder if they are happy with their investment.
Bienvenidos a Chaqueteo City.

Well, if they do proceed, looks like there will be no shortage of experienced personnel available if needed:

Hi guys,

I don't know if this will be of any interest in here, but i'll post it anyway :)

I work as a tugboat captain in Antwerp Harbor, en today i watched some pieces getting loaded from some trucks on to the quay.
The destination for the pieces were -> Punta Arena's.

They were parts of a big CAT excavator ready to be shipped out of Antwerp harbor :)

I took a picture which i can post when someone is interested.

I heard there is a pile of coal about six feet deep laying in shallow water off Lota, where there was coal mining activity until a few years ago. It's the coal that did not make it onto the ships in the harbor and fell into the sea. Someone won the concession to "Mine" that coal. Did it ever happen?
