Chilean Politics

Post by tiagoabner » Tue Jun 15, 2021 2:48 pm

I'm creating a separate thread so that we can discuss Chilean politics, policies, elections, and parties in a general manner. Hopefully, Admin will allow this thread to stay in.

I'm not a moderator, but I think a good way for us to avoid creating a lot of chaos on this thread would be to try to provide articles and additional reading when we criticize people so that those reading here can also check the source material and draw their own conclusions. We're all adults here, and I think we're capable of constructive criticism without degrading into endless pointless debates. At least, that's my idea for this topic.

I'll start the discussion with this article about "Lista del Pueblo", the left to far left alliance that managed to get a lot of candidates elected for the constitutional assembly. They are now trying to get candidates for the presidential and congress election:

https://radio.uchile.cl/2021/06/14/list ... amentaria/

I'm not a lawyer, and I'm by no means familiar with Chilean electoral law. However, the article implies that they wouldn't be able to run due to them not being a political party. My read on their move is that they're trying to skirt electoral law, as well as rules and regulations for parties, while at the same time acting like one. They've been trying to pull shenanigans since right after the election, and I don't think this will be the last time we'll see them trying to pull something out of their asses, regardless of the blatant lack of legal basis for their actions.

Here is a good article to bring yourself up to speed on the Presidential elections:

Thanks for the article. I think coalition names are really lame, and Chilean political parties could really use some professional marketeers.

PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY

Can someone read this and let me know if anything looks wrong. I have bolded and underlined some things I am not sure about if anyone can help bring me up to speed.

El 18 de julio se realizarán dos primarias:

Chile Vamos (right wing, Pinera`s coalition): Joaquín Lavín, Mario Desbordes, Ignacio Briones, Sebastián Sichel
Frente Amplio+PC (left/far left/non establishment left): Gabriel Boric y Daniel Jadue

Since this is an official legal process carried out with Servel, the official body, I guess that means I can just turn up at my local town voting place and vote on that day?

It says that "podrán votar todas las ciudadanas y ciudadanos mayor de 18 años con derecho a sufragio". What´s not clear to me is whether we can vote in both the Chile Vamos and Frente Amplio primaries or whether we can only vote for one candidate in total. Does anyone know? EDIT: JUNE 24th: Articles posted on pages 3 and 6 of this thread confirm that it is only one.

The far right Jose Antonio Kast and populist Pamela Jiles will not participate in these primaries, but will probably still be on the Presidential ballot in November.

The centre left (establishment left) coalition of Unidad Constituyente y Nuevo Trato-PL still has to choose between candidates that include Paula Narváez, Yasna Provoste and Carlos Maldonado. But looks like they will do that outside of this legal primary process in July. Does that mean the public won´t get a say?

so here is communist party canidate for president Jadue proposing renegotiating contracts with the media companies including "equality in media" .

that translates to, "in order for me to become a dictator, I need to control the media and communication like Maduro, Kim, and Putan".

Here is Lavin's program,

https://www.biobiochile.cl/noticias/nac ... cial.shtml

I could at least hold my nose and tolerate Lavin.

the polls have the two tied for president, but the poll today was the same one that was off by over 13 points predicting that the FA canidate would win the metro region. They seem to take those polls in the most extreme left wing neighborhoods in Chile, that don't seem to actually go vote.

oh, and just to screw with the country, congress just declared a national "indigenous day" at the last moment.

so, I think, Monday is a holiday.

They only had like 400+ years to do that, but yea today seems like a good idea.

I wonder if those idiots stopped to ask the indians.

One thing I know for sure about indians everywhere, they frigen hate a bunch of white people "helping" when they did not ask for it.

but, the commie kids in congress, I am sure they know better than the indians what they need. I am sure another day off is exactly their highest priority after almost a full year of lockdowns. more importantly, I am sure they are even more concerned that a bunch of white people that oppressed them and took their lands, have a day off too.

the first coherent, multi-generational, wealth building pension plan. like he wants to basically create a trust fund for every chilean born, that is added to over their life (through their own work and taxes), with ability to use the money to buy a house, that is topped off by the government at retirement in the event they fall short.

so, sad. I just realized he has no chance at all to win. his ideas make perfect sense, but they are just way, way over the head of most chileans education level.

"(...) licitar la gestión de inversiones del total de la cartera de afiliados a la institución que cobre menos comisión según mercado nacional, extranjero y tipo de activo."

OMG, yes. Please yes. His financial plan makes so much sense. It's a shame I still can't vote. I would vote for him, otherwise.

He even proposes how to pay for what he wants to implement. ❤️
