If you do go to Lonqimay, I recommend staying at Andenrose in Curacautin (right on the route to the mountain). The owner Hans is a fantastic cook and they have central heat, plenty of hot water and a big masonry stove (kachelofen) imported from Europe.
Lonquimay is the volcano that my brothers and I attempted to climb in the fall (we found out later that there's an actual path to the top) and that volcano is the mountain that is Ski Corralco.

For what it's worth, we stayed in Malalcahuello at a hotel called Nalcas (actually in one of their cabins), which I would say was acceptable, but not as good as the price would suggest (which is lame considering that it was autumn and therefore low season rates).

If I ever go back, it sounds like I should take a look at Andenrose, even if it is not as far up the valley.

I'm assuming there is a community of people skiing back country.

Of course getting to know the right people is key (people that understand the risks and know when to not go)...
never encountered such a group, but probably out there.

Antillanca is run by a club, or was founded by a club. The club still exists. These people would be in a good position to hook you up with other back country skiers:

We went to Cerro Catedral in Bariloche a few weeks back, I know it’s the other side of the border but it was very nice, end of season but lots of snow, very friendly people, and surprisingly cheap. Great scenery too witha the lakes around. You can stay in Cerro Catedral and walk to the lifts in the morning.

thanks for the ski club tip! I was also wondering about Bariloche (and Cerro Bayo). How easy are they to get to in winter. I remember there is a boat that crosses Lago Todo los Santos but really expensive if I recall...

The trip from Puerto Varas to Bariloche vía Peulla is great, I did it years ago, but it takes 2 days or so. Andesmar has buses from Chile to Bariloche, as far as I know there are no international flights to Bariloche though.

In my opinion, you should try La Parva. It is my favourite place of all. You will definitely have a fantastic time there.

That has got to be spam.

In fact, let me help you with that. here is there web site: https://www.laparva.cl

Everyone have a look at the photos, and how they are super tight, at just the right angle, with relatively small groups of people, to make it look like there are way more people there, and everyone is having a good time. But if you look real close, you will see a lot of rotten snow and rocks in the backgrounds. Even their pista map is a lie. It is including El corlorado and Valle Nevado in their runs (which yes, you can buy a pass and ski over there, but not the same resort).

I have made the mistake of sking there twice, and I want my money back for both trips and two perfectly good days of sking wasted on the la parva bunny hills.

I have never seen such a collection of fake black diamonds (and double black), along with blues and reds on bunny hills, intended to make people that can not ski a real black diamond, feel all good about themselves. Those signs are just there to pump people's egos, that are already way too big.

A real black diamond is if you blink, when you open your eyes you are looking at the emergency room ceiling. I was taking my jacket off, holding a conversation with my brother, while sking their "black" diamonds.

The only people that I have ever heard rave about La parva where the new rich Los condes crowd, that paid too much for one of their run down old condos because they thought it meant they had "made it". Same sort of crowd that buys vacation property in Pucon.

Hands down, to date, La Parva is my most hated place to ski in Chile. Someone needs to buy up el colorado and La parva, fire everyone that works there (because they are also some of the most incompetent and lazy workers), and make a real ski resort out of both.

Someone tells me they like la parva, and I tell them they need to get some ski lessons and and try some other places.

Well.......that's quite a ringing endorsement.

Like I said before, I think at this point if I ever "make it," and do manage to afford a ski trip here without sweating the small stuff, I will go off to Ski Corralco or somewhere south, at least a few hours from Santiago.

I liked Chillan when I went some years ago. Some great runs and off-piste as well. Weather however can be tricky as they close down the higher parts of the mountain frequently.
IN Santiago, Valle Nevado is by far the better option.
Looks like others agree with me in regards to Chillan:
