Expat Life in Chile Blog

Post by Britkid » Mon Sep 07, 2015 3:39 pm

I have been keeping a blog of our life in Chile. We moved here in January 2014.

In part it has been about experiences moving to Chile, such as finding a place to live, buying a car, shipping our possessions here in a shipping container and so on. And some of it has been about observations/musings on life in Chile. A few stories about cycling and trekking in the mountains. Nothing particularly exciting ever happened, apart from the odd occassion when it did, but was actually too exciting to mention on the blog. Maybe I'll share those stories on the forum one day.

I've been trying to put some colour into the nitty gritty of living in Chile so that people looking in from the outside can get a sense of what it's like beyond the facts and figures. I am 30 something with 2 kids. We live in central Chile, I've never been to southern Chile.

You can find the first blog here http://www.idledreamer.com/?p=267 and click through at the top right to go to later ones. (EDIT: Website died later, but still archived at:http://web.archive.org/web/201601121940 ... age_id=268)

Here http://www.idledreamer.com/?page_id=268 is the whole blog on a single page, starting with the most recent.

On Thursday (10th September) my ownership of the domain http://www.idledreamer.com expires and I don't think I am going to renew the paid domain and hosting, I don't think it's worth it any more. I tried transferring it to a free wordpress.com thing but I gave up after an hour of getting errors (I'm not very technical). So if you want to look, make sure you look before Thursday and if any of it is of any interest to anyone, use copy and paste as it may not be around for long. If anyone can think of a free place and a way to quickly archive the content, let me know, as long as it can be done in minutes, I am not spending hours on it.

Also, I like reading blogs as well as writing, but I haven't found too many good ones about Chile, here is a list I made below, but some of these are lapsed or left Chile or not particularly good. Actually now I think about it I'd better not post a ton of links due to forum policy, but try googling these or even just adding dot com to the end in some cases.

Let me know if you have your own blog or another good one to reccomend.

EDIT: ultimateguidetochile with dot com at the end is another one I found

Britkid, it is painful to lose all your hard typing work then vanish, meaning other people can not benefit from your experience there in Chile ... Find a friend tech savvy that can help you transfer all your hard work into perhaps a no-pay blog space etc. I'm sure the admin knows how to and give you a hand perhaps?

I'd better not trust Google services at all. They have already closed many popular services and Blogspot is not even popular these days.

https://www.tumblr.com/ is the most active blog platform currently.

There're also https://wordpress.com/ for standalone blogs and old-school http://www.livejournal.com/

Maybe you can archive with the wayback machine?

Good idea with the wayback machine, thanks!, just saved the blog here: http://web.archive.org/web/201509081149 ... age_id=268

The other blog suggestions I am sure they are easy to start a new blog, but to transfer existing content from another site, could be more tricky. I already tried it with wordpress and I couldn't do it.

Thanks a lot. For whatever it is that you are doing which admittedly I'm not savvy enough to actually figure out from your post. :D

I have been debating for years offering sub-domain (yourblog.allchile.net) expat blogs, mostly unfettered from moderation (obviously you can not comitt crimes on my server) for many years now; just such a double edge sowrd. The liabilty alone is massive, never mind any damage to our biz. Still, an idea i have not totally dismissed, but also have not devoted a lot of effort to working out the mechanics. Techinacally not difficult. Legally and financially very complicated.

For one, at least, we dont need to fill your blog with third-party advertising.

Let me give it some thought, and run it by legal (my wife). It might be time to revisit this idea.

Perhaps something like you have to have 100+ posts or something to get a blog account, to keep the spammers out. On the other hand, some of the trolls i have had to boot, but still had something interesting to say for some (px), might have been better dealt with by giving them their own corner / soap box where were not interfearimg with the forum day to day functioning.

The extra sever space essentially cost me nothing. Mostly manegment costs.

There are plenty of free hosting services available for people who want to start a blog.

I have personally used Weebly in the past. (link below) Works great and has a free plan option. I know there are many more, a quick google search should turn up tons of options.
