The ash will heat up in the sun on Osorno and melt the permanent ice........... its good that its fall and new snow will cover the ash, but then the ash layer becomes a shear level and may lead to avalanches, in Alaska several large glaciers were destroyed by volcanic ash a few years ago, not by the ash directly but they went from nice reflective white to heat absorbing grey and melted......
It's all about the wine.

yea, I had the same thought about avalanches earlier; but, I was wondering if it works with diffrent layers of ash. such as soft ash ----> rain soaked hard layer ---> more ash sort of way.

Well, the rain hit. we even had some hail for a few mins, but now it is sustained and heavy with a good wind behind it.

Well, that should create a fine mess.

Does anyone know if volcanic ash is good for anything?

if it does not completely destroy the crops by being too deep, it tends to make for richer farm land. The ash down in Futa from the Chaiten eruption started turning in to good soil a couple of years after the eruption.

My concern with this one is, they were showing blooms of sulphur on the surface in the video as the reporters were walking around on the news. The acid factor might be of concern.

There is farm land around Ensenada, but hardly the breadbasket of Chile. Overall, tourism, farmland, even aqua culture is fairly limited in the volcano exclusion zone. Money wise, tourism was likly what takes the biggest cash hit, outside of the 20 km exclusion zone. A lot of day tours and such go in to the area, and then spend most of their money on hotels and other things in say Puerto Varas or other towns around the lake. So, even that is pretty limited. If it settles down, a winter of rain, by next summer the tourism will be just fine too. The ski resort on the volcano is likly going to loose the season.

If NOAA's data and some weather centers prediction will come true this year with El Nino, the ashes will wash away, with rain from June to December.
Not only do I not know what's going on, I wouldn't know what to do about it if I did.

By the way, that rain turned in to snow on the volcano.

Well got a view this evening. Seems to be fairly settled. At times little to nothing seems to be coming out. The winds pretty much turned 180 degrees or more today, back towards argentina.

This through the 15x70 binoculars, zoomed x8 with my phone, and then enhanced to bring out the contrasts. About as close a shot as i can get.

And a comparison shot of the snow now covering about 2/3 of osorno. Ash on top of snow on top of ash with snow on top. Should make for an interesting spring thaw.
