when the Salmon industry is doing Good , they are happy .

when the industry crashes they start Bitching about how they were taken advantage of.

They don't mind their Property prices going up for the last 20 years as mainland Chileans have been making speculative buys in the Real estate market there for some time waiting forthe Bridge.

I've met a few of the anti bridgers, all late comers to Chiloe. My response was "Show me me an island anywhere which went backwards after they were connected to a mainland". Silence.....

Why Chile didn't give that Chiloe bridge job to the Chinos? They could have done it way cheaper than the Koreanos could?

Well a former clown in the Bachelet government, who up until he said this, I thought he had said some reasonable things to say , thinks tgis government should abandon the brigde construction.

Apparently when he was minister in 2006 the brigde was priced at 900 million so they kicked the can down the road saying it should be reviewed later on as was too expensive, and as a good politician does put it in the too hard basket, most thought that was the end of the bridge, then the Piñera government came in and 7 or 8 years later said we can do it for 700 million and change, so they tendered it out.

Now the consortium (which isn't a consortium because there is only Hyundai left ) wants another 200 million for the project, which would make it the same cost as what they looked at in 2006, which is probably not that bad considering 13 years have passed and inflation, materials, etc etc mean in real terms it is probably cheaper today than 13 years ago.

Bitran is also trying to score points saying they should abandon it and spend money in Chiloe, despite their being a plan which is actually going to put money into Chiloe AS WELl as the brigde, anyway, they interviewed some people in Chiloe on the radio and it seems his populism political point scoring rant didn't go down to well, they were like just shut the hell up and get the hell on with it already we are happy, we have an infrastructure development plan for the island which is already having money set aside for, and we are getting a bridge.

as i recall the chinos did bid, and for some reason hyndai got it. believe the chinese were trying to put some political strings on it.

the chinese can build what they do so cheap because the central gov subsidizes their industry when projects come with political leverage over the country buying. so far chile has been careful about keeping china at arms length.
