Where do you live and why did you choose it?

Post by Kaitee » Sun Jan 11, 2015 10:25 pm

I would like to hear about where people chose to live in Chile, and why they chose their location. Also, if they have input about pros and cons of different areas, other favorite places, etc. Please don't attack me, just curious.

I live in Valparaíso, specifically, the place is called Cerro Barón, from where, observing downtown street lights at night is quite enjoyable. The cleanest city on Earth is definitely here.

We miss you Rune. And stop bragging about clean cities as you may be overrun by foreigners. :P

Just watch your steps, and your shoes will be quite safe from what your eyes see. Or close your eyes while walking. But your shoes, then.. Well, this seems to be unresolvable, for the time being.

I review my shoes at the end of each excursion from the depto. and use discarded matchsticks and discarded paper towels to clean as needed. System works quite well.

~
but dearest rune~ the last we heard...
you were still comfortably in your empty field...
under the smoldering volcan...
just sitting, just sitting...
<and also drinking gato, of course>...

so may you please advise allchileans...
how/why did you cross over your fence to find said "greener grass"...
and now that your boundaries have been irrevocably<?> shifted...
have any/all expectations been met <somewhat satisfactorily?>...
other than finding "earth's cleanest city", that is...
<which will undoubtedly be disputed by a few sundry other of "earth's cleanest cities" ...>

I live in a sleepy little beach town, population about 2000, not far from Concepcion. I am close to nature, with a generally relaxed pace of life, I have access to normal services and utilities, I am near a large(ish) city with some (enough) work opportunities. I was looking for a slower, simpler life, and basically that's what I got, but there have been some hard lessons along the way.

Cali & Others,

Have you been over to Santa Cruz? I have made a number of friends over that way, I am curious about it. Looks like it's not far from where you are. Looks like a sleepy wine town with a significant amount of money hidden away there.

Also met some nice Chilenos in Ft. Lauderdale recently, the accent really is hard to miss. Had an asado together, very nice people. They are here to set up an export business from US to Chile, interesting stuff.

Pros: city on a river, full of young people (university students).
Cons: finding a good place to rent is very hard and it's expensive near the center. It's like San Francisco.

The number of cats enjoying the municipal market premises is beyond any expectations. They are everywhere, on the floor, under and on the tables, among fruits and tomatoes, hidden (hundreds of them) inside the covered area. Unimaginable in the dog's city. But true.

I chose Santiago because I like seeing the sun. I'd prefer to be somewhere greener on a lake but that mandates the southern regions where the Pacific gloom sets in and makes me go postal. Also the distance from "civilization" in Chile is not the same as distance from "civilization" in the US/Canada/EU. The farther you get from Santiago, the farther you disconnect from the rest of the world. Great for some. Not my cup of tea.
