they have untill about 4 pm this afternoon to get a handle on this. that is when the winds will shift offshore and push those fires back down the hills deeper in to the urban zones of valpo. vina will lilly be fine, but valpp has a denser and tighter geography. they are having trouble getting water and equipent up those hills. if you have driven around the hills in valpo, you see how narrow the streets are. they were too narrow in the horse and buggy days, a lot of the neighborhoods are nearly foot only access. definitly not going to be turning firetrucks around in them.

Carolina says a lot of those areas could be "tomas" - basically occupied by squatters who build shacks on someone else's land. Evidently the mayor of Valpo has encouraged the takings and building of shacks there....right before election time, of course. Interesting.

These were not shacks or some shanty town. These were mostly middle class homes. Yes,many had been added onto higgeldy piggeldy and many were made of combustible materials, but many were mortar and brick with solid foundations. If you look at the burned out shells of the houses, it is quite clear this was no slum. Though, at the end of the day, it is not important what sort of home you had if you lost it. 500 homes lost and 5 dead.

Thanks for the info DB. I don't wish for the spread of the thing either way, but was curious as to what we are truly talking about. Hopefully they get it under control.

But they will always go back to those hills. Because that is where the people of Valparaíso live. And fire is always going to be the danger in Valparaíso. Look at the people of Chaiten who preferred a half destroyed town with no services and an active volcano in the backyard to moving to a new location.
Yes they will always go back to the hills, everyone will fundraise and send them supplies from all over the country then the affected will moan and complain on tv that help isnt getting to them fast enough and the government should help them more, they will go back to dumping rubbish down the banks and gullys in the hills letting growth get out of control of weeds and bush (not that that would of helped much in this fire) they will continue to build illegal unsafe extensions to their houses, the city council will not enforce regulation, or enable better urban planning, kids will play with fire hydrants in summer and others will vandalise them. Sorry this is maybe too soon will all those affected and killed, but if I was offered a subsidy and way out I would jump at it, guess I am not Chilean with a Chilean mentality. If they cant learn anything from this tragedy that will the biggest tragedy. Chaiten is a bit different, these fires seem to happen every year or so

I disagree that fires like this happen every year or so. Valparaíso does have fires, its major vulnerability, but not like this. In twenty-five years I haven't seen anything like this. Nothing even remotely close to it. This had to do with high winds, difficult access and, perhaps, slow reaction to the original fire. This will probably be patched up rather than fixed, we agree on that, because I don't believe the will is there to spend what would need to be spent to make Valparaíso more safe. But 11 people are dead so far, so lets bury them before we predict the future.

they had at least 2 forest fires this year up on those mountain tops, and a lot of the people that are being interviewed ( victims) are comparring it to the 2008 fires that a lot of them also experienced. believe it was last year or the year before when a guy welding started a major fire too.

yes, this one is bigger. it is bigger because they have been ignoring the problem for years. there was no water and no access. the water company is claiming the constructions are illegal, but the people are saying they lived there for 20 years and had permits. it was the city that never did their job.

a lady that just lost her house basically said on tv, "shove your trans santiago up your...".

bachelette chickened out on her visit. people are pissed. there would have been another fire up there.

regardless if it is mom's fault, dad's fault, the mayor's fault, or the president's fault, you know who's fault it is not?

the 5 or 6 year old kids with and thier puppies and kittens that are now all homeless. those kids are still taking care of their animals because they love them, when they have very little themselves.

by the way, as i understand it it was a fire in 1885 or so in valpo that created the bomberios. it wiped out the city.

stats, 16 dead, 10000 evacuated, 500+ houses destroyed. still preliminary.

Got word from family. 10,000 without homes. The fires have not yet made it past downslope/gullies/ravines, where they may best be stopped. They are at the family bakery in Vina preparing mass quantities of food to take and distribute in Valpo. Hopefully the fire shall be stopped.
