Forest fire currently raging above Valparaíso

Post by john » Sat Apr 12, 2014 7:55 pm

I'm watching a forest fire above Valparaíso that seems to be raging out of control. Flames have covered a wide area and huge plumes of black smoke have almost covered Valparaíso Bay. From my vantage point in Viña del Mar, it appears that population centers in Valparaíso are definitely at risk.

Local TV is reporting that homes are burning in Cerro La Cruz.

Red alert called and authorities are calling for evacuation of population areas adjacent to the fire.

At least 40 homes have been destroyed.

There are plenty of fire companies there but access is the problem. This started in daylight, why weren't they bombarding it with water from the air?

They are saying it is the biggest fires in the last 50 years, apparantly after other fires, the state was offering subsidies for people to rebuild elsewhere, not back in those hills.
Military taking over control of Valpo for security, pubs, etc to close

But they will always go back to those hills. Because that is where the people of Valparaíso live. And fire is always going to be the danger in Valparaíso. Look at the people of Chaiten who preferred a half destroyed town with no services and an active volcano in the backyard to moving to a new location.

(CNN) -- A wildfire in Chile consumed more than 500 homes Saturday and continues to rage in highly populated areas, officials said.

At least one person has been injured in the flames that have swept over at least 660 acres, said Chile's National Emergency Office (ONEMI).

Strong winds fanned the flames into Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, two adjacent cities on the Pacific coast, ONEMI said.

"It's been one of the worst fires in history," said Vina del Mar fire superintendent, Fernando Reseio, who has been a firefighter for 30 years.

Many rows of flames could be seen blazing through houses in the urban area located about 50 miles from the capital city of Santiago.

More than 500 firefighters from seven provinces, some in helicopters, are battling the fire, an official said. But the wind is hampering their efforts to create firebreaks.

At least 500 homes have been destroyed in Valparaiso alone, mayor Jorge Castro said. The city will evacuate its prison, which contains 2,000 inmates, as a preventive measure, he said.

Valparaiso is under a red alert, said ONEMI spokesmand Ricardo Toro.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet declared a state of emergency, which legally allows armed forces to get involved.

It took the fire just six hours to devour the homes. In images broadcast by CNN sister network CNN Chile, residents could be seen fleeing the fires. The network reported that the sweeping fire is endangering thousands of homes.

Authorities have evacuated more than 3,000 residents.

there is the real possibility they could loose the city.

this is chile's lack of urban planning and enforcement of building codes coming home to roost. the "slummes" on the top of that hill have been fire issues for years. sooner or later one was going to really get away from them.

i also blaim in part the stupid zona typica thing. just because something is an old piece of shit building does not mean it is worth saving. it becomes an excuse to not tear things down. it also pushes uncontrolled urban sprawl in to other areas of towns because of lack of examination of the effects on the whole city.

my favorite is the shots on tv of the chilean congress building with the city burning all around behind them. this is not like some problem hiden away in some other city in the country. it is litterally at their doorstep.
