Toyota 4runner Diesel?

Post by Fishboy » Thu Apr 10, 2014 12:40 pm

Folks
does anyone know if it is possible to get a new (or newish) 4runner with a diesel engine?
It seems barmy to me that such a whacking great beast is only available in a petrol/gasoline option.

Cheers

Yeah, just buy the petrol version and get a turbo diesel ( used ) unit and do the swapping. You can get them starting
price around US$1999.00 and up. It should come complete and with the ECU as well.

In Chile????
I have 2007 bencinera.
Love the vehicle.
More expensive maybe. But what quality in return. I feel really safe in it for several reasons. Import for family, in these driving conditions.
Never seen a petrolero in Chile.

I found the same issue when i was looking for cars a number of years back in chile!........

finding something similar in diesel is hard... i was considering a ford ranger for the next car if i stayed in chile.... however its a pickup not a suv! XLT 4x4 Diesel!

As far as I can tell, even the 2014 models are only available with one engine... a 6-cylinder, 4.0 gasoline.

thanks folks - I had a long and difficult previous life as someone who tinkered/fixed/spent all my money on vehicles and am looking for a nice easy future life with clean hands. As such, don't really want to have to swap engines as suggested by HybridAmbassador.

I want a offroad-capable SUV with a lockable back rather than a camioneta, so looks like it is going to be a Pathfinder or one of the US options. Alternatively, I might just go mental and get a long-wheelbase Landrover Defender and mount a couple of union flags on the wings :D
(This will likely result in a return to the days of dirty hands however)

I had a 2010 4Runner while in Chile and like Seawolf, loved the thing and would strongly recommend it. Not the cheapest vehicle (fuel-wise) for tooling around town, but surprisingly economical cruising around the open roads and did it in great comfort. When looking to buy a 4WD, I ended up comparing the Mitsubishi Montero (which did have a diesel option) and the 4Runner and the Toyota won me over easily as a much better vehicle for a very similar price.

It's a real shame the 4Runner is not imported to Oz. The diesel price differential does not exist here like in Chile :(

Any thoughts on the Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Obviously no diesel option, but seems to get decent reviews.
