Sentence handed down: 11 years :|

https://www.biobiochile.cl/noticias/nac ... cial.shtml

Seems to be 3 sentences of 5+3+3.

He has 10 days to appeal

No mention what the conditions of sentence are, probation eligibility, or house arrest/ankle monitoring for some portion

Wow, thats sending a message I guess. Do the crime, do the time.
A rather random time to announce sentencing, on a Sunday morning in the middle of a plebiscite .

yea, that was about right. he is lucky he did not get a whole lot more, or they did not pile on terrorism charges on top of it.

over 5 years, there is no option for house arrest.

Definitely.
That's as much as "proper" murderers get.
Pretty sure that Cobin didn't intend to kill anybody, given his familiarity with firearms.

I am proud of the Chilean court system for that sentence. Let him go and colonize elsewhere when his sentence is done.

you mean he accidentally bought 500 rounds, posted videos online saying he was going to shoot people, stopped his truck snd opened fire on an unarmed crowd by accident?

His intent, in chile and most other countries, was legally baked in to his actions.

Do you know how hard it is to accidentally hit someone with a hand gun at over 10 feet?

one of my favorite interviews about hand guns, was an interview with a guy that was like the the u.s. 5 times quick draw champion. He was asked what kind of gun he has at home for home defense. He said, "a shotgun".

Even he was not confident in his ability to hit a target under pressure.

500 rounds? that is several thousand dollars in amo in Chile.

Even back in my hunting days, when I had a decent size gun collection, I don't think I ever owned 500 rounds at one time.

Put that in perspective. Even in wwll, with full on bonzi charges by japense soldiers, an infrentry man would rarely fire more than 500 rounds. In fact, many frontline infantry went through the whole war without firing 500 rounds.

It is a well studied issues in military circles, how most infantry men in the history of war will not actually intentionally shoot to kill at another solider, even if there life is in danger, given a chance to get away with it (e.g no one is watching).

so yea, not buying any of that crap.

No sympathy for this hothead - but:
He renounced his US citizenship, he's a Chilean citizen.
What about a practical suggestion of where he should go after they let him out?

Was he toting 500 rounds of ammo in his pickup at the time?
If not, why mention this?

OK, he's an extreme and vocal gringo right-winger but if he had been an anonymous Chilean or Mapuche I'm sure the sentence would have been lighter. As said earlier, the government sent a message (against an easy target).

Will he be kicked out of the coutry after completing the sentence? Or is it just that you imagine he would want to leave?

EDIT: Not directing this question at anyone in particular.

Regardless of what he did, he is still a Chilean citizen with citizen's rights.
Then there is the vexed question of Citizenship Vs Nationality. Don't know how that's applied here.
So this "kick him out" stuff is a pretty simplistic reaction.

Chile being as small as it is, he will probably want to leave anyway. Gringos stick out like the proverbial sore thumb, and he would be a target for any flaite with a grudge.
His address was made public, so goodness knows what his family have had to go through.

The justice system here is as screwed up as everything else. Don't forget the Luchsingers.
